Examples of How to Annotate

-annotating for main idea

-writing a brief description about a short passage

-underline key ideas

-note words that are confusing

-multiple meanings

These are some of the many ways one can annotate a passage.

Here are Examples of annotations:

Example 1

On page 149, Ma says "Grandpa-It's like he's dead a year." Grandpa died only recently in the book. I think Ma is saying that the journey to California is long and challenging. You don't really think about the past events, you look forward to the future. This event only seems to be a memory because so many other events has happened.

Example 2

Simon meet the Lord of the Flies. The Lord of the Flies told Simon, "D'you see? You're not wanted understand? We are going to have fun on this island. Understand? ...so don't try it on, my poor misguided boy, or else-" (Goulding 144). This was stated in Chapter 8 foreshadowing what would happen to Simon in chapter 9. Will Simon's fate become the boy's fate as well?

Example 3

Annotating a passage for specific appeals.
