Tustumena Elementary Newsletter

December 16, 2014

Ohhhh, you better watch out, you better not cry... you better not pout, I'm tellin' you why...

It is that time. This is the last newsletter of 2014, then Santa Claus is coming to Kasilof. The only week that is more exciting for kids than the week before Christmas, is the week before summer vacation, and we are half way there too.

The kids have been working hard and playing hard. We have had our Winter Concert, Spelling Bee and our Geography Bee in the last week and we are getting set for the Reindeer Games on Thursday. No wonder the kids are excited.

We will be starting up at full speed in January with the beginning of the third quarter. Teachers will be assessing student growth during the first few weeks. These assessments are vital in determining if our instruction is adequate to meet the needs of the students. Our students are being held to a higher standard than even just a few years ago. One way of explaining this is (roughly) the expectations and standards of the new 7th graders used to be the 8th grade standards, and so the expectations and standards of every grade between 2nd and 7th, have been condensed. This is not an exact illustration, but it is very close. So if school seems to be becoming more challenging, it is. But it is not too much. Our (your) kids are up to it. They are being very successful largely due to the intense instruction by our teachers and your support.

Please stay tuned to our district website and the media for any updates if you have any questions about school closures due to weather. I am personally ready for a little more snow and a little less ice/rain.

From my family to yours, we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
