I have initially reserved with Patriots Point 100 spaces for 50 males and 50 females, but based on numbers so far, I will definitely need to cut that way down. If you are planning to attend the trip, and haven't made a reservation with me yet, please let me know ASAP, so that I can make an informed decision about reducing the reservation spots.

COST

This is a two-night event, and the per-person cost will be $77. The Patriot's Point website says $96/person, but December campers receive at 20% discount (which is why we go the first weekend in December!). The $77/person fee includes meals all day Saturday and on Sunday morning, exploring all of Patriots Point, and one included activity/excursion, but does not include Friday lunch/dinner, or transportation costs. In budgeting, I would plan on about $100/person to cover the base fee plus the extras.

Reserving Spaces, then paying the money (by November 23): Payment is NOT required to reserve a space - what we really need to know, ASAP, is (1) who is coming, (2) the preferred included activity/excursion (see next paragraph), and (3) how many youth males, youth females, adult males and adult females per family. The per-person reservation money itself needs to be paid to GS Troop 1806 on or before the November 23 deadline. Of course, since Troop 1806 has already advanced the initial deposit, having paid reservations in hand earlier is always welcome!

INCLUDED AND OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Note that the Fort Sumter Tour has been re-named "Forts of Charleston Harbor." In previous years, Patriots Point allowed us to divide up the overall contingent into two or three subgroups that would get a particular "included activity." Initially, we put everyone in the Fort Sumter Tour as the "included activity," unless you express a preference for a different activity, in which case we will give it a try with Patriots Point. The Flight Academy choice needs to know youth age, since it is different for children 6-9 than it is for children 10 and up. And even though you make a choice, it is not guaranteed - sometimes they cancel or modify the available activities/excursions without a lot of advance notice, and there have to be certain minimum numbers to make it work. And note that the Charleston Harbor Tour is not available in December.

SUPERVISION RULES

Cub Scouts are required by their overnight camping rules to have an adult with them, one on one. Because of berthing rules (females in one place, males in another), if a Cub Scout is being supervised for the weekend by a female adult, male adults will be appointed to supervise that Cub Scout in the berthing (sleeping) areas at night. The female supervising adult would simply take over during non-berthing hours. We ask that each pack participating have at least one registered leader come who will lead/look after the boys in their own pack.

FAMILY CAMPING/SIBLINGS

The Yorktown event is open to the entire family, with a minimum age of 6 years. So yes, this includes siblings and extended family that may want to come. See additional rules (below) for adults family camping with Girl Scout troops

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

The USS Yorktown/Patriots Point is a two overnight, in-the-aircraft-carrier museum, in Charleston/Mount Pleasant, SC, about a five-hour drive from Durham. You should plan on departing Durham late Friday morning, so that you will arrive at Patriots Point before our 6:30 PM anticipated boarding time. Of course, leaving late morning on Friday means missing most or all of that school day. Most schools treat this as an excused absence since the Yorktown is definitely an educational experience. We return Sunday afternoon, December 9, 2018. Females will bunk in "junior officer quarters," males will bunk in "enlisted men's quarters."


Transportation to and from Patriots Point (in Mount Pleasant/Charleston SC) is provided by, and at the cost of, attending families. Carpooling is encouraged. Until it reaches capacity, Troop 451 Scouts will be using Jim's bus. If there aren't enough Troop 451 Scouts attending to fill the bus, Jim usually opens up extra seats to Cub Scout families.

  • Send Payment (address below, prior to the November 23 deadline) a check payable to GS Troop 1806 for $77 for each person.
  • For example, if your Cub Scout is going, accompanied by mom, dad and little sister, you would send me an email with one youth male, one youth female, one adult male, one adult female, and a check to GS Troop 1806 for $308 (4 x 77). It would also be very helpful to include your preferred "included activity."

MAKING PAYMENT

See the far right column in the status report (above) for payment status. The first number is the fee for the trip, the second number shows what you have paid. If you are showing unpaid, this year payments are to Girl Scout Troop 1806, sent to me at the address below.
