What We Are Learning
ELA/ Reading
Reading-
We will read both literature and informational books as we focus on our essential question, “What does it mean to have a great heart, literally and figuratively?”
Writing-
Students will work to create focus statement and and informational piece with evidence and quotes from the text. They will be learning a number of writing strategies to help guide them in their writing.
Language Arts-
Punctuation is our focus for September! Students will learn how to correctly quote a text, and follow rules for capitalization and commas with adjectives and conjunctions.
We will use our 4C’s throughout the month to collaborate, communicate, show creativity, and use critical thinking skills in groups and individually.
Vocabulary: literal, figurative, main idea, key details, focus statement
Math
In September we will be learning about conversions within the metric system and multi-digit multiplication and division. Our first Common Assessment will be on September 13th.
Learning Targets:
- I can express metric measurements in length, mass and capacity in terms of smaller unit.
- I can model and solve addition and subtraction word problems involving metric length, capacity and mass.
-I can multiply by multiples of 10,000, and 1,000.
- I can multiply multi-digit numbers up to 4 digits by 1 digit.
- I can Solve multi-step word problems using multiplication, addition or subtraction.
Please remind students to be here every day! We complete a new math lesson every day.

Science and Social Studies
Unit: The Solar System
Learning Targets:
- Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare and contrast the physical attributes of stars and planets.
- Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to model the effects of the position and motion of the Earth and the moon in relation to the sun as observed from the Earth.

Social Studies
Unit: Forming a New Nation
Learning Targets:
- SS4H1 Explain the causes, events, and results of the American Revolution.
- SS4CG1 Describe the meaning of natural rights as found in the Declaration of Independence (the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness)
