Instruct! Jean Piaget
Jean Piaget is known for his theories of cognitive development. Piaget believed that children's thought processes change as they develop physically and as they interact with the world around them.
There are many elements of Piaget's theories that have become widely known. One such concept is that of object permanence - the idea that an object continues to exist even when we cannot see it. Young children only develop this understanding as they get older.
Piaget's Theories of Cognitive Development
Cognitive Development deals with thinking and mental activities.
Jean Piaget came up with these Cognitive stages.
Why? He wanted to understand how people developed their thinking skills over time.
The following should help explain his theory.
Sensorimotor
- everything at this stage centers around learning by touching and tasting items
- example: give a baby a toy key and they stick it into their mouth
- birth to 2 years
Preoperational
- children develop language, memory, and imagination
- 2 to 7 years
Concrete
- children are developing factual knowledge
- example: Algebra
- 7 to 11 years
Formal
- young adulthoods develop more abstract thoughts
- 11 to adulthood
This is a helpful way to remember the different stages: Socks Protect Cold Feet
Socks - Sensorimotor
Protect - Preoperational
Cold - Concrete
Feet - Formal
