Arbor Springs Elementary School
Giving Thankfully! November, 2015
Our Mission: Arbor Springs Committed to Student Success
From Dr. D. and Dr. T.
Can you believe we are only a few weeks from the end of the first half of the school year! As always, this time of year is quite busy. Grandparents joined us November 13 for a quick breakfast, some awesome presentations from our students, and classroom visits. Thank you so much to everyone who attended! During the same time, our fall Book Fair was occurring, and our grandparents enjoyed shopping for books for themselves and others.
During our short December, we have many events occurring! Chorus program is December 1, the 3rd-grade musical is December 8, and Santa Night is December 10th. Students will have the opportunity to purchase gifts for their families at our Secret Santa Shop on Santa Night and parents will have the chance to learn more about Google Apps for Education on December 1 before the chorus program. Our school spelling bee will be December 17 with the county-wide bee on January 7, and students will enjoy Polar Express Day on Friday, December 18. It's a busy time of year!
We are in the process of upgrading our playgrounds. We have newly installed borders and are seeking bids on mulch. We hope to have this process finished by the time students return in January.
If you are missing jackets or sweaters, they may be in our overflowing lost and found bin in the front office. Please ask your child to check, or you are welcome to stop in and look for yourself. We will be donating these items to Goodwill before we leave for the break.
As always, thank you for your participation and support of our many efforts at Arbor Springs. We are happy to report that our students (with your help) donated 2,195 canned good for the annual Can-A-Thon!
Please let us know if we can help with anything, at any time. We can be reached at 770-463-5903.

Nurse's Notes
Hard to believe that this year is almost over. 2016 is right around the corner. Winter is here and that means a rise in the diagnosis of cold and flu. You might get tired of hearing this, but the best way to protect yourself is good hand washing. Also, the 2015/2016 flu vaccine is now available. Please contact your pediatrician. Last but not least…I know I say this over and over, but, if you send “over the counter” medications to school they must be in the original package. Do not send individual tablets. A note with instructions and permission must accompany any medication to be given. A medication cannot be given without parent permission. This includes cough drops!! Cough drops are considered a medication and must be taken in the clinic. A teacher cannot administer any type of medication, even cough drops. If it is a prescription medication, it must be in the original package with a pharmacy label and a medication form will need to be filled out.
Thank you and Merry Christmas!! Rebecca Sims RN

Swimming in a School of Character:
This month character word is courage! Courage means to meet a challenge without giving in to fear.
Having courage means that children will be brave as they meet new experiences, difficult situations, and/or dangerous encounters. Also, courage involves being firm because of strong moral convictions.
Here are some tips for teaching your children about courage:
Help them see their own courage. When you see courage in your children, identify it. “It took courage to stand up for yourself like that.” “It sounds like you did the right thing even though it wasn’t easy. That is what we call courage.”
Make a family practice of connecting and contributing. Plan a short activity that gives back each week. Children have fun doing this as a secret. They can deliver flowers anonymously to a neighbor’s doorstep, take a short clean-up walk around the block or write a note of appreciation to a teacher or friend.
Self-reflect in the presence of your children. Share with your children experiences where you had to be courageous.
Model doing what is right for you, even when it isn’t popular with your child.
