St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 4 | WEEK 1 | 15 OCTOBER 2020
Dear Lord,
As we prepare for the coming of a new term make us ready, attentive and available to hear you.
Thank You for the gift of being able to rise each day with the assurance that You walk through it with us.
Thank You for the gifts of creativity and uniqueness, and the energy to put them to good use.
May all that we are today, all that we try to do today, may all our encounters, reflections, even the frustrations and failings all be place in your hands.
May the work we do and the way we do it, bring new hope, new life, and courage to all we come in contact with this term. We thank you, Lord.
We make this prayer through Christ Our Lord, Amen.
Message form the Principal
Welcome back to a term that will very quickly pass due to it being a nine-week term. The students and school will be very busy and I am sure we will be looking forward to Christmas and a well earned holiday at the end of it.
Today we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Canonisation of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Many thanks to Miss Purvis for organising the Mass and Monsignor O’Loughlin for celebrating the Mass for us. It was also nice to see Sr Maree back after being away for so long due to illness and COVID-19. It was a very fitting day for her to return.
A reminder to families that students should not be on the school grounds prior to 8:30am. St Columba’s provides supervision only from 8:30am until the bell goes at 8:50am. On entering the school grounds during the day all visitors are required to sign in at the front office. If students are going to play on the playground equipment after school it is a requirement that a parent must be there to supervise. The school staff do not supervise the play equipment after school. If students are unsupervised on the equipment they will be asked to leave the area.
There are a number of families walking through the Kiss and Drive entry. Please be aware that this is entry is not for pedestrians. In the interests of our students’ safety, please follow these protocols.
A reminder to families that there are still school fees outstanding. Please finalise prior to the end of October or advise the office of your payment plan for the remainder of the year.
A reminder, students will finish this term on Friday December 11.
There will be a School Board meeting Wednesday, October 28 at 7:00pm in the school staffroom.
The School Board and P&F AGMs will be on Tuesday 10 November at 7:00pm in the school undercover area. Entry onto the Board will be by election at the AGM. There will be a nomination form sent home with next week’s Newsletter.
People interested in being elected onto the Board please note the following:
- Due to the incorporation of CEWA the School Board no longer manages the school finances. This process is now through CEWA and the school principal.
- It is not involved in the day to day operations of St Columba’s.
The P&F AGM will also be held on Tuesday, 10 November. All positions are declared open and those who have nominated for positions to the Executive are elected by vote. There will be a nomination form sent home with next week’s Newsletter.
God Bless and keep safe.

Celebrating 10 years of St Mary Mackillop's sainthood
The Sisters of Saint Joseph will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the canonisation of St Mary MacKillop this weekend with commemorative prayers, videos and a global vigil in her honour.
St Mary MacKillop was canonised by Pope Benedict XVI in Rome on October 17, 2010. About 9000 Australians travelled to Rome to celebrate the occasion. Ten years on, the Sisters of Saint Joseph are inviting Australians to reflect on what the canonisation of Australia’s first saint meant to them then and now. The theme chosen for this celebration is "Take Fresh Courage". This theme, reflecting the many challenges Australians have faced in 2020 , is taken from a letter written by St Mary MacKillop in 1877.
To mark this special occasion, Sister Maree joined us for morning tea: "I received a warm welcome this morning as I stepped into the beautiful new Administration building at St Columba's School. As it was my first visit to the school for this year, I was introduced to new staff and I enjoyed catching up with staff I knew. I joined with the staff as they celebrated October birthdays with a delicious morning tea. A big thank you to all the Staff. I am looking forward to visiting the school again during the next few weeks. May Mary MacKillop strengthen us in our daily lives and inspire us with fresh courage and hope as we engage with those we meet on our daily journey Holy Spirit Strengthen us. Amen"

The importance of perseverance
Perseverance pushes you to overcome difficulties. Having perseverance means that when you are facing a challenge, you use your mind and your body to overcome it.
Here are ten ways to encourage perseverance in your child:
1. Appreciate them for who they are.
2. Focus on their strengths.
3. Start small.
4. Quick, sincere praise.
5. Choose reasonable expectations.
6. Find the lesson.
7. Show them how to plan ahead.
8. Show growth.
