6th grade
In social studies, 6th graders will complete their study of Africa south of the Sahara, then journey on to the Middle East region. Students will learn about the geography and history of the region, as well as the cultures of the people of North Africa and Southwest Asia.
Students have finished researching and presenting their research about how an item changes over time. All of us learned some interesting details about the past. We will continue to analyze, discuss and create an array of poetry. After Spring Break, we are excited to start our unit on Holes and Walk Two Moons. Students will be reading and learning about characterization throughout the novel. In addition, we are also working on STAAR reading strategies such as inference, main idea, and summarizing.
In science for the fifth six weeks, students will be learning about geology! We will study the rock cycle, plate tectonics, Earth’s composition and structure, and continental drift.
For math, students are just wrapping up a study on algebraic expressions, inequalities, and properties with Module 5 CBA this week. We will move into the fifth six weeks by beginning our Geometry Unit (Module 6). This six weeks has many important things in math--our second district snapshot on March 5 and a Practice STAAR Benchmark on 3/25. Please try to plan appointments on a different day than the 25th. We are working hard and learning many new concepts in math this semester!
7th grade
7th grade students are soaring into spring! Everyone knows Pi Day is March 14th, but any true mathematician realizes Pi is not 3.14, but rather an irrational constant, which continues infinitely in decimal expansion. How many digits of Pi do you have memorized? We will be focusing on volume of prisms and pyramids. Feel free to ask your student what “B” stands for.
In Texas history, we have been studying the American Civil War. We have completed the Causes of the Civil War Google Classroom assignment. The students used FlipGrid to give their views on Texas' decision to secede from the union. We also are looking forward to our Texas Independence Day celebration on March 1st.
In ILA, students just finished working in the world of advertising on their powers of persuasion and are now delving into poetry. They have begun their Literature Circles so please encourage them to read every day.
7th grade science students are starting to wrap up their genetics unit and will begin ecology. They will soon be exploring biomes, adaptations and food webs.
8th grade
Our 8th grade scientists have concluded their study of "Oceans and Weather," and are starting their next unit on "Ecosystems." Students will focus heavily on how human choices impact the future of environmental systems on Earth.
In ILA students have immersed themselves in their novels, examining how literary elements convey thematic ideas, and how challenges of a character affect human nature. The collaboration and innovative questions discussed with peers is certainly preparing them to be Future Ready! This is a perfect transition into our next unit of study about social challenges - how can one person make a difference and how they communicate effectively. Additionally, pre-ap ILA just finished their first literary analysis where they analyze how authors use figurative language to reveal theme.
U.S. History is being introduced to the Early Republic, the Presidents that would make the United States the great nation that it is today. Our “We The People” competition was on February 19th at 6:00 PM. The independent study students worked diligently studying the Constitution to get ready for this competition.
Counselor’s Corner
As we enter into spring and the final two grading periods of the school year, we encourage parents to work as a team with our staff to help our students stay focused on finishing the school year strong.
All 7th grade students will be taking the STAAR Writing test during the second week of April, and 8th grade students will be taking both the STAAR Math and STAAR Reading tests the same week, so this 6 weeks period is an important time of preparation.
Please also make note that we have several important dates and activities planned during this time:

Friday, March 22, 2019– Aim for Success student presentations through 6th grade Science classes
Aim for Success is an independent, non-profit, educational organization that promotes a lifestyle of excellence by encouraging the development of self control, self respect, and self discipline. Through live presentations to our 6th graders, students are encouraged to develop strong, responsible character as they deal with sexual pressure. Through Aim for Success presentations, students learn the wisdom of committing to be sexually abstinent until marriage. Parents are inspired to raise responsible children who know their choices have consequences. If you would prefer that your child not participate in this presentation, please contact Kristin Cabaniss at cabanisk@friscoisd.org.
