Native Americans
Join Our Protest!!
Alcatraz Occupation
On November 9, 1969, 79 Native Americans of various tribes seized Alcatraz Island saying that it was Indian Territory. By the end of November over 600 demonstrators occupied the island and offered the government $24 for the island. After 18 months the demonstrators were forced off, this did not stop their protests however.
American Indian Movement
Educated Native Americans insisted on being called Native Americans instead of American Indians. They adopted the term “red-power” for their movement in echo of the African American’s term “black power” for their civil rights movement. AIM promoted self sufficiency for Native Americans and solutions to strengthen Native American culture.
