Update for 6th Grade Families

ON SCHOOL CLOSURE & ONLINE LEARNING

Stay Well Neal Families

Hello families! We miss working with your students but are glad everyone has the opportunity to stay safe during this time. As a reminder, school is closed until at least April 3rd. We will have online instruction available starting March 23rd. This newsletter is an attempt to direct you to resources that can answer your questions. It will not have all the answers, but please see the sections below and let me know should you have questions.

If you have not already, please join the 6th grade remind text updates here: https://www.remind.com/join/28de4bd

We need everyone to help spread the word, so please share this newsletter (and Remind) with any families you know, and ask your students to share it with their friends. The more families we can reach, the better we can share important information. Let's come together as a Neal community.

Big picture

What You Need to Know!

Your child will have the opportunity to continue learning at home next week March 23rd. We will not be penalizing children who are unable to complete assignments, but we will be offering additional credit for those students who participate in online learning. Our team has created a plan to deliver instruction through Google Classroom and YouTube. Teachers will be making instructional videos to post to YouTube, and then giving assignments through google classroom. Please note these updates:

  • WEEK OF MAR 16: Spring Break for students. Students are encourage to read every day for 20 minutes or more (Book Harvest will provide free books) There will be no assignments.
  • MARCH 23rd: Teacher annual leave day. There will be no assignments.
  • MARCH 24th - APRIL 3rd: Teachers will be giving online assignments for all students.
  • MARCH 23rd - APRIL 3rd: DPS will have meal service locations. See dpsnc.net for details.

PLEASE NOTE that if you (1) do not have home WiFi or (2) have more than one student sharing a computer or slow WiFi, you may be eligible for a free computer and WiFi from DPS. Please see THIS LINK in English or THIS LINK IN SPANISH to apply. It is fast and easy. They have many devices to give away. If you or your student know a family that might wish to use this service, please share.

Finally and perhaps most importantly, this time at home can be tremendously stressful as the world is changing. Know that we support you and consider us all a Neal Family. If you want, you can do some daily mindfulness and relaxation exercises for your students. You can start with CALM.COM for calming meditations and GONOODLE for fun activities to channel energy.
