Positive PR
Let's start with ourselves, our home life, and our conversations with personal acquaintances. Everyone sees the need to vent. But where are you venting and to whom. If your spouse only every hears you complaining about school and the system and then someone asks them about public education...what will they say? Just recently, my wife became annoyed with me (which is not unusual) after me having commented that her team isn't the best example of how to collaborate. After my comment, she began to tell me all the wonderful things they are doing...and of course stuck her tongue out at me. I responded, by letting her know that I hadn't heard any of those positive things from her this year. Have you ever over heard an educator tell an adolescent to not become a teacher? Would you encourage your children to become educators?
We are the ambassadors of our profession and our schools 24/7. It's like a the little blanket that you can't take away from a toddler...hopefully less stinky. I am not saying that you cannot vent, but be careful where and with whom you vent. You should also balance those comments and emotions with the wonderful things that are happening as well.
Challenge: Ask your spouse, significant other, or even friends to reflect on how you portray public education, your district, and your school.

Next Round of Coaching Visits
During my next round of visits we will do a few walkthroughs again as well as review your staffing plan for next year. Additionally, I would like to visit your school during a few specific times. Please send me calendar invites to a PLC, RtI data meeting, coaching conversation, crucial conversation, and PD that you are leading. I know these times are limited at the end of the year, but if my schedule matches your time, I would love to visit.
CNA Timeline update
Plan4Learning updated the Needs Assessment section before communicating the changes to us. I wanted to make you aware, as you may receive questions from your campuses. I did reach out to Plan4Learning to ask if we could revert back to the old format for 2017-18 because we trained our administrators in February and the deadline to enter Needs Assessment data is this Friday. However, my request was unsuccessful.
Under the Needs Assessment Summary, there are now two options. P4L added a note to let our administrators know that we are using option 1, which is the list of NCLB areas.
When a specific area is selected from the dropdown, the boxes for Summary and Strengths remain unchanged. The Needs section has changed and each need/problem statement must be entered one at a time. There is also a box to enter an optional Root Cause for each Need/Problem Statement. The message to GISD, at the top of the page, states we will work on Root Causes this summer.
If you receive questions from your campuses and want to forward them to me, I’ll be happy to assist in getting them answered.
Thank you!

Principal Presence Required
Updates to board policy currently require that a pricicpal be present during CPS questioning or police questioning students. The police almost always cooperate, however, CPS does not. So, you should request to be present and should they refuse, you allow them to question the learner and you document that you asked and they refused.
Refer to board policy GBA local
Attendance taking
I understand that you have been communicated with already about attendance. Please know that the time at which it is taken is just as important as taking the attendance. School have already begun to lose funding over this issue. Please don't let it be us :)
Below is the message we received.
TEA is now checking to make sure all campus teachers are taking attendance. 100% of funding can be removed when it is discovered that teachers are not doing this. We report that 10:00 a.m. is our reporting time in elementary and 10 minutes after the bell in middle school and 20 minutes after the bell in high school.
Tier 2 Question
Several folks had asked me about moving learners to tier 2 using multiple data sources.
I double checked with Carra King and should a learner score around the 25th percentile at BOY, the educator should place in a small group and remain in tier 1 with daily intervention and progress monitoring. At the MOY point, should they still be around the 25th percentile, but all other data indicates that they are lower, they may be placed into tier 2.
Money Money Money Money...Money
- Attend Training...Nobody likes a checkup but we all need it :)
- If you aren't sure about the state of affairs, have the business office come out.
- Your secretaries have monthly meetings...perhaps you could attend a few.
- Hiring well, checking references, and ensuring that those who should handle money don't...makes all the difference in the world.
- Read the CDAP, now the CDAP, Love the CDAP

Security Concerns
Expectations
- Tier 1 is important which is why we ask for lesson plans and conduct walkthroughs. Tier 2 and 3 are also very important. Please make sure that educators have plans available for those learners and times as well of you to view.
