The Importance of Effective Independent Reading

According to Jennifer Serravallo, "You could be the most eloquent teacher, the best strategy group facilitator, the most insightful conferrer. But if you send your kids back for independent reading and they don't read, then they won't make the progress that you are hoping for." Through the use of the SEI, the focus has been on whether the students are engaged during independent reading. Starting next week, I will begin completing a second SEI. This is to evaluate if the students met their goals that were established from the first SEI. If they have, then it is a time to celebrate. If they have not, then new goals can be created using resources such as The Reading Strategies book by Serravallo.

Literacy Night!

Literacy night will be held on Tuesday, February 23. Our literacy night will have a camping theme titled, "Read S'more Books". Dinner will be served from 5:30-6:00 in the cafeteria. Session rotations will be 6:00-7:15. There will be several storytellers, parent information rooms and a read aloud room with s'more snacks. The literacy committee will need some help pulling off literacy night, so I will be sending out a SignUp Genius sheet for volunteer time slots. Also, any decorations, tents, etc. that you may have that would fit the camping theme would be greatly appreciated.

February Professional Development

We will continue our study on the book The Next Step in Guided Reading by Jan Richardson. We will focus on chapter 7 Helping Struggling Readers. We will analyze student data to set goals and develop an action plan. We will update the school data wall. Also there will be time to plan lessons, look for resources, or evaluate literacy stations. Remember to sign up in PD Express for the session titled "PD Planning with Purpose-PVES". Chickfila lunch will be provided as well as drinks and snacks. Please remember to bring the following to our meeting:

-Data from a student that is not progressing (running records, reading log, anecdotal notes, SEI, interest inventory, etc.)

-Recent guided reading levels to update the data wall

-The Next Step in Guided Reading book

-Grade level copy of The Reading Strategies Book by Jennifer Serravallo

Please let me know if there is anything that I can do to help support you in the classroom. I could model or co-teach a guided reading lesson. If there is a student that isn't progressing, then we can brainstorm strategies to implement. Just send me an email or stop by room and I am more than willing to help.
