CTE Director's Message
2023 - 2024 school year is all about taking Pender County Schools CTE to the next level. Our theme for this year is "Level UP". We plan to level up in impact, student success and community economic mobility. We have an amazing staff, programs, students and plans in place for this upcoming school year.
This school year we are planning to continue to engage our students in unique experiential learning activities that are preparing them for their futures. These activities are helping to equip our students with the tools to be enrolled, enlisted or employed upon graduation. What amazing opportunities we are providing for students in Career and Technical Education.

CFMS Students create their own electrical circuits in STEM class
This course is meant to teach students to:
Discover and use technology, engineering, and design journals and the Engineering Design Process. Construct and test prototypes to various design challenges. Experiment with different types of renewable and recyclable material sources. Explore the knowledge and skills for careers in technology, engineering, and design pathways.
Pender High School Public Safety Guest Speaker
Pender High School Public Safety students got to hear from a local public safety official.
Public Safety Course:
This course provides basic career information in public safety including corrections, emergency and fire management, security and protection, law enforcement, and legal services. FEMA certifications NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 are also a part of this course. Additionally students will develop a personal plan for a career in public safety. The course includes skills in each area, using resources from the community to help deliver instruction to the students. English language arts are reinforced.
Topsail High School Health Science Students Dissect Gummy Bears to Learn Medical Terms
Health Science Course
This course is developed to focus on human anatomy, physiology, and human body diseases and disorders, and recognizing and responding to first aid emergencies. Students will learn about healthcare careers within the context of human body systems. Projects, teamwork, and demonstrations serve as instructional strategies that reinforce the curriculum content. English language arts and science are reinforced in this course.
Topsail High School Career Management Students Use Making Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches as a way to Practice Communication Skills
Career Management Course
This course gives students a competitive advantage through valuable leadership, career development, career management, essential employability skills, and communication skills. Students will discover their personal learning style, develop their speaking skills, and build team management skills. This course is recommended for all CTE students, including students involved with a Career and Technical Student Organization.
Surf City Middle School Health Science Program Gets a Facelift with Paxton Patterson Modules

College & Career Ready LabsⓇ provide the ultimate career exploration to engage students in authentic problem-based learning experiences as they discover their interests and aptitudes. Whether you are looking to build a program with exposure to a broad range of Career Clusters, or define a more focused pathway, College & Career Ready Labs provide a model for success.

Heide Trask High School Animal Science Students Engage with Ferrets
Animal Science:
This course focuses on animal physiology, breeding, nutrition, health, and best management practices in preparation for an animal science career. Leadership development and employability skills are integral to the course and are delivered through authentic experiences. English language arts, mathematics, and science are reinforced in this class.

Portrait of a Graduate
Portrait of a Graduate
An initiative led by the N.C Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to define the skills and mindsets students need for success after high school has been unfolding since March. Now, with the help of 1,200 North Carolinians across the state, this grassroots-informed Portrait of a Graduate has been finalized.
Revealed October 18th the result of that effort – known as the Portrait of a Graduate – aims to ensure that North Carolina students are well equipped for the broadest range of postsecondary opportunities. Aligning with State Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Catherine Truitt’s 2022 focus on the “Year of the Workforce,” the Portrait can be adopted by schools and districts to better prepare the state’s 1.5 million students for civic life, career or college.
As determined by the design teams that were part of the initiative, the statewide Portrait identifies seven competencies that students should possess upon graduation from high school to help them thrive in the 21st century.
These include:
- Adaptability
- Collaboration
- Communication
- Critical Thinking
- Empathy
- Learner’s Mindset
- Personal Responsibility
My Future NC Data
PCS CTE's vision of ensuring that students are enrolled, enlisted or employed are aligned with My Future NC and House Bill 664. To ensure that the state remains economically competitive, the state shall ensure that by the year 2030, 2 million 16 to 24 year olds will have earned a recognized industry credential or post-secondary degree.
The data in the report below:
•Highlights county and regional performance on key indicators
•Lists specific opportunities for improvement that will ultimately lead to increased attainment
•Facilitates decision-making on LOCAL priorities
•Uses data to identify three actionable opportunity areas to improve future attainment outcomes
