What's our story?
Recently, I had the chance to hear Manny Scott speak at one of our VBCPS summer conferences. Never heard of Manny Scott? Neither had I.
He reminded us (not that we needed this) that soon our students will be eagerly entering our doors, each with their own story. You know, THAT story that shapes us and influences us to be who we are as well as who we are not. THAT story that sometimes gets in the way of learning. THAT story that limits our potential and holds us back.
After listening to Manny as well as Dr. Spence, our challenge this year is to know each student's story. No matter who you are in our school, administrator, teacher, custodian, or teacher assistant, know our students. Then as educators, our challenge is to teach so that they overcome the chapters of frustration, sadness, or abandonment to replace them with chapters of hope, joy, and "I can!"
Together, I know we can know every student and help every student love to learn to inspire them to write new chapters. Below is a video I encourage you to take a moment to watch. As you watch this video, think about who made a difference in your life trajectory. For me, among many, it was three teachers - a beautiful first grade teacher -Mrs. Burns, a confident 12th grade government teacher - Mrs. Sanders, and a bold-way-ahead-of-her-time college professor - Ms. Newton. But it's not about me. It's about us and our students.
So here's to an amazing year of knowing our students and rewriting the chapters of their lives. I can't wait to do it with you and to rewrite our story. See you soon! LA
