Re-Focus 2019-20
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. MLK, Jr
What a powerful statement. None of us planned to be going through what is happening right now. And let's be honest, some of us really, really like to have a plan. The past few weeks have been one giant curveball after another and I have a feeling the game isn't over yet. More changes are coming and we will be asked to meet the challenges these changes will bring. How will you respond?
Will you start working now to find even more ways to meet the needs of those we serve? Will you step out of your comfort zone and try new and different approaches and platforms to teaching and learning? Will you make yourself vulnerable and share with your colleagues? Are you willing to try something even if you are not sure it will work? Will you collaborate virtually? Will you pick up the phone and have those difficult conversations with kids and parents who are not performing? Will you make it your mission to reach all students? Will you do more than is asked or required of you?
What we do everyday, this business of school, we can call it work, but really it's love. I had more loving to do this year, and I thought I had more time. So now, I'm challenged to find new ways to accomplish those things that I still want to do. It's is going to be different - it won't look the same - but that's okay. It will just be a different way to get to where I wanted to be.
In literatue we learn that every good story has a beginning, middle, and an end. Our ending just got interrupted. What are you willing to do to finish writing the story? How will the story of the 19/20 school year end for you?
Govenor Mike DeWine tweeted this week, "We can't panic over this because we are going to be doing this for a while. Come up with a routine for how you want to live that is consistent with the new reality that we have to live under." I would further challenge all of us to come up with a routine for how we want to live that is consistent with our values, beliefs, and commitments. We can't stop living, growing, and moving forward. We just have to find new ways to accomplish it.
