St. Mike's Matters - Thursday Notes

March 1, 2018 Issue #21

Dear St. Michael Families,

Lenten blessings to you! As we near the end of the second trimester, I would like to invite each of you to join us for a wonderful Lenten tradition at our school. We begin each week of Lent gathered as a school for the Stations of the Cross. This is a special time of prayer, reflection, and reverence as we journey through Lent as a faith community. It grounds us in Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and asks our students to reflectively relate His journey and sacrifice to their own lives. Our 8th grade students did a great job leading us through the first four Stations of the Cross this past Monday. Please join us at 8:30 for the remaining Mondays of Lent-it is so wonderful to see parents sharing this prayerful experience with our students.

NBA legend Lenny Wilkens will be speaking to our students this coming Tuesday, March 6th at 2:00 in the gym (parents are welcome to attend). Thank you, Chad and Janice Sutter, for arranging this presentation! Lenny is a 13-time NBA All-Star and a 3-time member of the Basketball Hall of Fame-as a player, a coach, and part of the coaching staff of the 1992 U.S. Olympics “Dream Team”. Lenny was also the head coach of the Seattle Sonics during their 1979 NBA Championship season. The Lenny Wilkens Foundation supports organizations that help children achieve basic needs so that they can reach their full potential. The primary recipient of funds from the Lenny Wilkens Foundation is the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic, a community clinic of Children’s Hospital of Seattle. Lenny Wilkens is also Catholic! Click here for an interview with him from Northwest Catholic where he discusses his faith.

As a reminder, registration packets for the 2018-2019 school year will be going home on Thursday, March 8th. Additionally, if you applied for tuition assistance, your award letters will be sent home on March 8th as well.

News from the Health Room

Hello St. Mike’s families! As we strive to keep ourselves and our families free from illness, we should continue to practice some fundamental things:

· Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

· Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after use and wash your hands. If a tissue is not available, cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve, not your hand.

· Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

· Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.

· Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.

Our students also practice healthy initiatives through routine cleaning of their desks at the end of each day, and throughout the day, as needed. Once students have left for the day, our teachers go through their classroom and use disinfecting wipes to wipe down the desks. Custodial staff ensure all high-touch hard surfaces are disinfected.

Reminding your children to practice personal hygiene, such as frequent hand-washing, is important in preventing illness and the spread of germs. Stay healthy!

Volunteer and Visitor sign in reminder

Just a reminder that everyone who needs to come into the school building before 3:00 PM needs to sign in at the office. That includes anyone that wants to have lunch in the lunch room. You need to come to the office to sign in and get a visitor sticker before you head over to the lunch room. Thank you!

Please move all the way forward when dropping off your children in the morning and in the afternoon. DO NOT PARK IN THE PICKUP LINE AND WALK YOUR CHILDREN INTO THE SCHOOL! Please park in a parking spot if you need to walk your child into the school. Parking anywhere other than a parking spot can create a danger for our children. It also causes a traffic jam that can unnecessarily make other families late. Please share this information with anyone that picks up or drops off your children. Thank you for doing your part to ensure that we have a safe and efficient parking lot!
