Our Nation's English Language Learners
BICS and CALP
Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency Skills, or CALP, refers to the academic, formal vocabulary we need to teach students so that they are able to think, learn, and express themselves in English in the academic subjects. This includes more cognitively demanding skills, such as classifying, evaluating, and inferring. Students learn both types of language skills concurrently, but CALPs may need to be taught explicitly to our English learners.
