Counselor’s Corner from Copopa Elementary School
Hello, everyone! The holidays have come and gone, and we have a long winter ahead!
These days are the best for snuggling up together and reading books, sled riding,
building snowmen, and enjoying hot chocolate! Even on our darkest days, it is important
to remember those small things to be grateful for. During the months of December and
January in classroom guidance, kindergarten students learned about friendship and the
way we act can determine if we can make and keep our friends. Silly monkey friends,
untrustworthy snake friends, mean shark friends, too shy turtle friends, and follower
lamb friends are not always the best choices. Teddy bear friends who listen, are kind,
and helpful are what we are trying to be!
Students in first grade learned about “warm fuzzies and cold pricklies”. Warm fuzzies
are those kind words we hear that make us feel great on the inside, and cold pricklies
are those mean, hateful words that make us sad. We read “Rainbow Fish to the
Rescue” by Marcus Pfister, and learned about wrinkled hearts. First graders are
practicing “warm fuzzies” with their classmates every day!
Third grade students read the book “The Quiltmaker’s Gift” by Jeff Brumbeau, a lovely
book that describes an unhappy king who has all the material goods he could ever
want, and the quiltmaker who teaches him about the true happiness of giving. We
discussed how we practice kindness, and students created a quilt square where they
added an act of kindness. We put the squares together on a bulletin board for a 3 rd
grade kindness quilt!
Fourth grade students learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his contribution to civil
rights and equality, and the things he endured to stand up for what is right. We had
some lively discussions about our country and our own dreams for our families, school,
community, and country. The students wrote down their dreams, so many kind thoughts
about peace, non-violence, and cures for Covid, it is very inspiring.
I received notification that the following local organization is offering virtual drama,
music, and acting classes for students. They are technically open to Elyria students but
are accepting other students on a case by case basis if there is room. Check it out at
this website www.sparktheatre4youth.org.
Students are doing a great job and it is a joy to be able to teach them such important
things. Contact me anytime if you have questions about the counseling program at
Copopa or if you need assistance with your child. I can be reached at 440-236-3773 or
