4-H End of the Year Report/Story
4-H End of the Year Reports and 4-H Awards Books will be due to the office on October 2. More information on Year End Reports will be in your September Newsletter. For those that want to get started early, Phelps County 4-H members who are 11 and younger are asked to write a yearly story summarizing their 4-H year as their record book.
4-H’ers who are 12 and older may submit an Achievement Application Check it out online at https://4h.unl.edu/achievement-application
Only Achievement Applications will be accepted for youth applying to attend National 4-H Congress or National 4-H Conference or applying for Nebraska 4-H Foundation Scholarships.
Phelps-Gosper Outdoor Archery August 6

The 2023 Nebraska State Fair entry site is open and accepting entries! Entry closes at 8:00 PM CST on August 10. All 4-H members participating in a 4-H contest or exhibiting 4-H livestock or dogs must complete the ShoWorks entry process. The Nebraska State Fair is the premier opportunity for 4-H members to showcase what they have learned and worked on throughout the year. At the State Fair, we celebrate the successes of thousands of youth who have learned and grown through 4-H. The State Fair is a prime opportunity for 4-H members to cultivate skills they have learned in 4-H projects, put their life skills and good character to work, discover new areas of interest, and meet new people. The Nebraska State Fair is held yearly at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds in Grand Island, Nebraska. This year's event will be held from August 25 - September 4, 2023.

State Fair Static Exhibits
If your County Fair Static Exhibit is selected for State Fair, you received a State Fair
Sticker on your county fair entry card of your project at the County Fair. Your exhibit is then due in the County Extension Office no later than Monday, August 21.
· Moving over-sized exhibits will be the responsibility of the 4-H’er.
· Extension staff is not responsible for any damaged, lost or stolen items.
Exhibitors or families wishing to pick up their own static exhibits from the Nebraska State Fair must complete an Exhibit Hall Release form and submit it to their local Extension office before August 20. The Exhibit Hall Release form must be obtained from your local Extension office. Proper paperwork must be signed by the exhibitor/family and county Extension staff. This form gives non-Extension personnel permission to pick up items after the fair. The designated person listed on the form will be responsible for picking up the item(s).
Exhibitors who have correctly completed and submitted release forms may pick up their exhibit(s) on Monday, Sept. 4 of the State Fair from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. or from 8:00 a.m.-noon on Tuesday, Sept. 5. Exhibits must be checked out before being removed from the exhibit hall. The person picking up the exhibit must be ready to sign for the exhibit and show their identification.
Static Exhibit Release Form
• NO EXHIBITS WILL BE RELEASED PRIOR TO 6:00 PM on September 4th.
• Those picking up need to check exhibit out before taking item from State Fair static building.
• The family must contact their county extension staff member to acquire their signature and turn in the form to the county extension office prior to AUGUST 23rd.
• County staff will turn in this form to Lisa Spilker and Dawn Lindsley on or before state fair entry day. Proper paperwork has to be signed by exhibitor/family and county staff so the item(s) are eligible for release.
• The designated person(s) listed below on the form will be responsible for picking up the items. The person(s) picking up the exhibit must be ready to sign for the exhibit and show their ID. Admission will be charged all day Monday, Labor Day.

State Fair Premier Science Award
All exhibits are eligible! The Premier Science Award is open to any 4-H member with at least one static exhibit selected for State Fair. Exhibitors may apply with one exhibit from any project area/department. An award application should be completed and turned in to the county Extension office by the county's deadline. Nebraska State Fair 4-H Contest Entry
All 4-H members planning to participate in any 4-H contest must be entered in ShoWorks before 8:00 PM CST on August 10. This entry process must be completed by the 4-H member (or their family). Fees must be paid for using a debit/credit card. There are no other payment options. Contest participants will not be entered by the county Extension office. Contests available include the Chicken BBQ, Culinary Challenge, Dairy Judging, Dog Skillathon, Livestock Fitting, Horticulture Judging, Insect Identification, Tree Identification, and Weed and Grass Identification. The Nebraska 4-H Video Companion Animal Showmanship
The Nebraska 4-H Video Companion Animal Showmanship Contest provides youth an opportunity to showcase their knowledge and skills they have developed in their 4-H companion animal project. The contest is open to youth ages 10-18 who are enrolled in a companion animal project.
Videos should be recorded at the youth’s home and submitted following the instructions outlined below. Entries must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. CST on August 14, 2023.

Culinary Challenge Contest at the Nebraska State Fair!
The 4-H Culinary Challenge Contest will require youth to demonstrate healthy decision making through nutrition, food preparation, menu planning, and food safety; utilizing a foods and nutrition curriculum. They will apply healthy living knowledge and skills by planning a nutritious menu, demonstrating their understanding of time management skills in the kitchen, and expressing their originality and creativity through an appropriate themed and properly set table. To showcase these skills, youth will create a menu, prepare a food item, and choose an appropriate theme for their occasion while expressing their food, nutrition, and food safety knowledge during a live interview with a judge at the contest. In order to highlight knowledge and skills acquired during pre-contest preparation, youth will utilize technology as part of their interview. The 2023 challenge ingredient is sunflowers. No id sheets are required for county fair. Please consult page 23 in the premium book for details of project. State Fair Online Entry due August 10.
State Fair rabbits will need to be tattooed, and have a certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI).
State Fair Animal Update
· Exhibitors will notify the County Extension Staff of any retags that may occur up to the time of check-in at the State Fair.
· Exhibitors will select which animal nominations they have chosen to show at State Fair on the State Fair entry website. All nominated and validated animals will be automatically listed as a choice option for entry registration.
· Exhibitors will be required to bring the breed registration association paperwork to check in at State Fair for animals wanting to show in a breed class. The registration papers must show the exhibitor’s name, a co-owner who is an immediate member of the exhibitor’s family or the family farm, ranch name, or parent’s name.
· Rabbit, Poultry, & livestock state fair exhibitors have until August 10th to enter online.

Entry Prices and Optional Livestock Purchase Items
Note: All Beef, Swine, Sheep, Goat, Rabbit and Poultry 4-H/FFA exhibitors will automatically receive an 11-day admission wristband at no cost. Exhibitors will not have to select a wristband as it will automatically be provided with the livestock, rabbit, and/or poultry entry. 4-H Dog Exhibitors and other non-livestock in-person entries (4-H Contests, Fashion Show, and the Robotics Showcase) will receive a free daily gate pass. All purchase items will be in the exhibitor packet when the exhibitor checks in at the Livestock Check-In Trailer.

Nebraska State Fair Livestock Health Requirements - CVI
Please refer to the State Fair website for Livestock Health Requirements at https://www.statefair.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/2023HealthRequirements.pdf. Exhibitors must abide by all stated requirements to be able to participate.
All animals entering the Nebraska State Fairgrounds must be accompanied by a current CVI (except pigeons and poultry originating in Nebraska) and shall have official identification listed on the CVI. CVIs must list the Nebraska State Fair as consignee. New for 2023 electronic CVIs will be accepted. They must be emailed to nsfvetcheck@gmail.com. CVIs must be issued within thirty (30) days of the exhibition.
Each CVI must:
a. Be issued by an accredited licensed veterinarian.
b. Show name and address of owner or exhibitor.
c. Show all required tests and/or vaccinations.
d. Each Swine CVI must contain the following statement: “To the best of my knowledge, swine represented on this certificate have not been exposed to, infected with or originated from premises known to be infected by Swine Enteric Corona Disease (SECD) or Seneca Valley Virus (SVV) in the last thirty (30) days.”
e. All hoofed animals originating from states or counties with Vesicular Stomatitis will require extra examination and CVI requirements performed by an accredited veterinarian. Exhibitors should contact the Nebraska State Veterinarian’s office for updates on requirements.
