Cumberland, North Smithfield & Lincoln Prevention Coalitions
March, 2018
Despite the temperatures and forecast, we have been busy planning for an active springtime and spreading prevention awareness, especially during prom and graduation time!

Respect Week at CHS!
Our amazing ATI (Above the Influence) from Cumberland participated in a thought provoking activity during "Respect Week" at Cumberland High School. Students marked up a life-size paper body with typical insults & derogatory comments often heard. And although the comments were "covered up" with band-aids afterward, the messages still remained. An important lesson, for any age, to learn!

Is an "Open House" in your future?
Spring is a busy time of year for many that are thinking of listing their home for sale. The Lincoln Prevention Coalition is VERY excited about our new campaign and partnership with local Real Estate Agents to advise sellers to lock up or dispose of unwanted/expired medications during "Open Houses".
On a daily basis, misused prescription drugs kill more than 40 Americans, and 2,500 young people abuse a prescription drug for the first time, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
One reason Drug thieves target open houses is because homeowners don’t consider their prescriptions to be items of discernible value. However, when you consider the street value of some prescription drugs can total into the thousands of dollars, it is no wonder why someone would want to steal them.
The ease of taking prescription drugs from an open house is the main reason homes are targeted. Consider the instance where an individual asks to use a bathroom during an open house. This affords an opportunity to lock the door and quickly search for prescription drugs in the most likely place they will be located. Once found, thieves can easily place dozens of pills into their pocket and return the empty container exactly as they found it. Usually no one will notice the pills are missing until the thief is long gone.
Our new campaign will be "rolled out" during the month of April, just in time for "Drug Take Back Day", April 28th, 2018! Stay tuned for more details!
And while the front door will be open, be sure your "medicine cabinet" is NOT!
