General Information

The Healing through Creativity: Art Therapy Training Workshops introduce educators, mental health, medical professionals and students to the basic principles and practice of art therapy with emotionally, behaviorally, developmentally and medically challenged children, adolescents and adults.

These are experiential, theoretical and process-oriented workshops. As a participant you are invited to draw, paint and sculpt a variety of art therapeutic exercises that help clients and patients identify and express their thoughts, feelings, conflicts, strengths and increase their self-esteem and coping skills.


Healing CHILDREN through Creativity Workshop goals:


  • Introduction to the field of art therapy.
  • Outline the history of art therapy highlighting key contributors to the field.
  • Explain the underlying principles of art therapy.
  • Outline the components an art therapy course of treatment.
  • Experience art materials through sensorimotor art therapeutic processes.
  • Experience non-directive and directive evaluation and treatment approaches.
  • Illustrate art therapy principles and practice by reviewing six case studies of clients and their art therapeutic course of treatment.
  • Demonstrate the use of metaphor and healing stories in art therapy.
  • Present art therapeutic interventions to improve the client's self-esteem, increase insight, decrease trauma and acting-out behaviors.
  • Review forensic art therapy evaluation techniques for suspected child sexual abuse.
  • Review the importance of object relations, art making and expression.
  • Understand issues involving the interpretation of children's art.



Healing TRAUMA through Creativity Workshop goals:


  • Introduction to art therapy and trauma characteristics.
  • Highlights of key contributors to the field of art therapy and trauma.
  • Explain the underlying principles of art therapy in trauma recovery.
  • Demonstrate how counselors and therapists may safely use visual art expression with trauma clients.
  • Experience art materials through sensorimotor art therapeutic processes in trauma recovery.
  • Experience non-directive and directive evaluation and treatment approaches.
  • Demonstrate the use of metaphor and healing stories in art therapy and trauma recovery.
  • Present visual art interventions to improve self-esteem, increase insight, decrease trauma and acting-out behaviors.
  • Review the importance of object relations, art making and expression.
  • Understand issues involving the interpretation of traumatized client's artworks.

Earn Graduate Credit or CEUs from PSU

You may elect to earn one Graduate Academic Credit or 1.4 CEUs or 14 clock hours per workshop.


Both the Healing Children through Creativity: Art Therapy Training Workshop and the Healing Trauma through Creativity Workshop are offered in cooperation with Portland State University.


Portland State University is an approved provider of CEUs and graduate credit by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).

Registration and Tuition Fees


Tuition fees include:


  • a 2-day experiential workshop
  • 14 hours of art therapy education
  • lectures and demonstrations
  • powerpoint presentations
  • case studies and treatment strategies
  • hands-on assessments and exercises
  • a training manual, including powerpoint outlines
  • plentiful drawing, painting and clay sculpture supplies
  • two healthy refreshment breaks per day, AM and PM
  • certificate of attendance documenting 14 hours of training
