Harry Versus the First 100 Days of School
100 short chapters tells the story of Harry and his first 100 days of school in first grade. Every first grader (and older kids as well!) will relate to the joys, sorrows, and scary parts of the first 100 days of school.
Kindergarten
A few weeks ago, we read Over and Under the Snow and then sorted animals from the story. Afterwards, we chose one of the animals (red fox) and learned more about it in Pebble Go. Recently, we took a look at one of our digital citizenship lessons. We learned about being safe when we are online. We talked about what "online" means and what devices we use to go online. We then listened to the story, "Chicken Clicking" and talked about the choices that chicken made. We then came up with some better choices for chicken if he were to go online again. Finally, we listened to a song about staying safe online and then drew pictures about what we learned.
First Grade
First graders recently finished an author study on Eric Carle. We read a few of his books, read his biography, and watched videos that explained his illustrating style. Our author study led us to ask wonder questions about honeybees and to find information about honeybees in two different sources.
SECOND GRADE
Second graders recently listened to the book, Akiak, a fictional picture book about the Iditarod race. Following the story, students watched videos about the Iditarod, looked at the official race website, and wrote Wh question words (such as Who, What) on colorful sticky notes. We are currently in the middle of looking at some of these questions and looking at specific sources to answer these questions. Students will also have the chance to choose a musher and then follow their progress during the race! By the middle of the month, we will start reading Flat Stanley.
THIRD GRADE
Third graders recently learned about the Olympics. Specifically, they learned why the Olympic symbol has five rings and where the colors of the rings come from. Ask a third grader; we were fascinated by what we found out! Students were able to choose an Olympic winter sport to research, add drawings to their final draft, and then take a look at flags and flag colors for some of the countries that participate in the Olympics.
FOURTH GRADE
Fourth graders are learning about renewable and non renewable resources as part of their Science unit, in the classroom. To prepare for this unit, students were asked to write down what they knew about these resources and then write down any questions they had. Following that, we determined what our research questions would be, and then we explored three different Library Resources to find facts and examples of both of these resources. The students will work together to compare and contrast their findings.
FIFTH GRADE
Fifth graders recently learned about the TRAP method. The TRAP method helps us to determine if a website is trustworthy. Are the authors experts? Would there be a better website to go to if we were looking for information on a specific topic? Together, we TRAPed dogisland.com and the students had a blast. Take a look for yourself! Afterwards, students worked in pairs to TRAP two more websites from a list. We had a lot of fun with this!
