New Jersey v. T.L.O

Sent to the Supreme Court

The Case

Two freshmen were smoking in the bathroom and was caught by a teacher. One of them was T.L.O . T.L.O was taken to the vice principle's office. The vice principle took her bag and emptied it out. There laid a pack of cigarettes, a small bag a marijuana, money, a list of people who owed her, and rolled cigarette paper. Thus violating her 4th Amendment. “In New Jersey v. T.L.O. (1985)… we reaffirmed that the constitutional rights of students in public school are not automatically coextensive with the rights of adults in other settings.” This meant that New Jersey won the case.
