Letter from Principal Nelson
Smallville-
I trust this correspondence finds you and yours healthy and warm this weekend. We are making it through the cold weather and Omicron with minimal disruption. Be that as it may, we are nowhere out of the woodworks yet. Stay diligent and make sure your student knows that if we want to return to normalcy, we still have a lot of work to do. We know it seems the light at the end of the tunnel keeps appearing farther and farther away, but our wisdom and experience have taught us that the promised land always lies on the other side of the wilderness.
Now, for some celebrations:
Small Middle School Teacher of the Year for 2021-2022
TEACHER OF THE YEAR - Daniel Sainza Corral

It is with great honor that I announce to you this year’s winner: Daniel Sainza Corral
Mr. Sainza currently teaches our Dual Language Science classes for all three grade levels. Yes, that means he teaches 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science entirely in Spanish! Ever since he set foot on our campus, he quickly earned the reputation of being the most helpful, caring, and giving professional we have. He is quick to volunteer, and even though he speaks both English and Spanish fluently, he has yet to master the word “no” when requests are made. His passion is working with all students, and he does not shy away from any subject or situation. He not only leads our Dual Language Core class but also tutors students in math and works with kids in our Twilight program. He gives of himself so freely, which inspires all of us here on campus to provide as much as we can too. We have all been elevated by his presence and cannot think of a better person to receive this prestigious honor.
TEACHER OF PROMISE - Lindsey Hargrove

Small Middle School Teacher of Promise for 2021-2022
This year we are pleased to announce that the TOP award winner is: Lindsey Hargrove
Ms. Hargrove is not only new to our campus but also new to teaching. However, you would not know that if you stepped foot in her 7th-grade science classroom. She manages the students like a seasoned veteran and knows the curriculum backward and forwards. She knows how each of her students learns and has a unique way to make science engaging and approachable. She earned her stripes here with us last year as a permanent sub for 6th grade ELA, and moving her into this science position, her specialty, was as close to a no-brainer as one can have.
Please let these two phenomenal educators know how much we appreciate them by sending them a note. They, like our students, know rewards are not given, they are earned, and these two have certainly earned these annual honors.

NJHS
New Members of NJHS will be notified by emails to parents and students on MONDAY!!!! It was a very competitive group this year and we look forward to meeting our new members in person at their first NJHS Meeting on Thursday, February 10th. Students, on Monday, should look for and accept an invitation to the NJHS BLEND Course.
Small Family in need
One of our Small families suffered a serious car crash last week that resulted in the entire family being hospitalized. We are so thankful that everyone will be OK. However, providing meals over the next 3 weeks will be a challenge as the parents go through their recovery. Our community is invited to volunteer to sign up with Sarah Krier, sarah.krier@austinisd.org, 512-841-6711, if you would like to assist in the following ways:
1) You may sign up on our Care Calendar with by emailing or calling Ms. Krier for a specific day to deliver a meal for 4 that can be frozen. You can bring the meal to the school, and we will take care of delivery to the family. The kids are not picky eaters, so any typical kid's meal goes. Some of their favorite meals are steak / burgers, mashed potatoes, corn, and fresh berry flavored treats (strawberries are favorite!).
2) You may wish to donate towards Door Dash by dropping off a door dash gift card to the front office or emailing it Ms. Krier at sarah.krier@austinisd.org. This is a wonderful way to allow the family some choice over their meals. 🙂
To respect the privacy of the family as they heal, we will not release their names or discuss the details of their situation. Thank you for honoring this request. We wish them all a speedy recovery and look forward to having our student back at school soon!

New Attendance Clerk and Procedures
Hi everyone, I am Amanda Elliott the new attendance specialist at Small. I am excited to be working with everyone and look forward to getting to know you. We have updated the Small Website Attendance page and can submit notes online. This will allow for less paper and will help make Small a Greener Campus. On the Attendance Page you can now enter an absence and request an early pickup. Remember when picking up students early to give us at least an hour notice. This will ensure you are not waiting for your student for up to 15 minutes to arrive when you get here. It helps saves you time as well and will make sure you get to where you need to go as well. You can still handwrite an excuse note as well if needed. Don't forget that school starts right at 8:20. If you arrive after that your student will be marked Tardy. Please feel free to contact me with any questions by email at amanda.elliott@austinisd.org or directly at 512-841-6702. Have a wonderful Holiday Season.

NJHS
Due to a much larger-than-expected pool of applicants for NJHS, notifications of acceptance to NJHS will be postponed until the end of January.
