Common Name: Rabies
Scientific Name: Lyssavirus
Characteristic of rabies virus:
- Not a retrovirus
- Has spikes made from glycoprotien
- Made from RNA
Transmitted, Diagnosed, and Treated:
Transmitted through bite or scratch from diseased mammal to non-diseased mammal.
- domestic cats and dogs
- wild dogs
Diagnosed using samples of saliva, serum, spinal fluid, skin biopsies, series of tests; for example direct fluorescent anitbody (DFA)
- For humans several tests are required.
Treated by series of shots, no specific treatment, most likely always fatal.
- Excess saliva
- Muscles spasms
- Pain in muscles
- Can be irritable
- Excess vomiting
Can prevented by taking precaution when around animals.
