Friday Faculty Focus
News and Notes about #BeBCMS-Issue #9- 2018
The month of LUCK is here!
When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.....
My Irish eyes are smiling proud on an ELITE Kindness week! I am so proud of our staff and scholars for all their hard work and dedication to making this a great experience for our scholars! I had great pride in my heart when our scholars came back on campus with reflections from the movie and stories about the awesome experience. A huge thank you to Ms. Waddell for her ELITE field trip planning! We have more learning experience fun on the horizon!
March is going to bring us lots of good luck! The GMAS WIN (#ProjectLevelUP) curriculum that I have been piloting with Katherine and Blaine will be ready to roll out on Tuesday March 13th. The expectation is that all WIN classes are focusing on GMAS types of questions and prep to prepare us for our testing that begins on April 30th! Your team leaders will have more information for you!
PBIS celebration is this Friday. Stay tuned for details from me at Learning with Liz. We had a 68% decrease in MAJOR referrals. Elite work!
We will continue to work on our Openings and you will have lots of classroom visitors. TKES is rolling and we are working hard to get those #4 and #5 observations done for staff on the FULL TKES plans. Please be intentional when it comes to your planning. Lesson plan folders are not located in the workroom!

Remember our #BeBCMS Moral Imperatives to an ELITE school?
a. Come to School- BE AMAZING- Go Home! Repeat
b. Bell to Bell instruction
c. ALL instruction/teaching will be on grade level and standards based
d. Take a STAND for teaching and learning. Get up!
Openings are a critical component in your lesson design. Each class needs to begin with a clear opening that will start the learning with focus.
Teachers:
What are key HOOKS you can you to set the tone for an ELITE opening? How are you setting the stage to excite the scholar about the learning that is going to be taking place? Having ELITE hooks are the best way to get your class set for elite learning! Scholars get excited when they think they are learning something amazing! I was in a 7th grade Science class this morning that ROCKED the hook with fingerprints! Students were asking questions, they were thinking, they were exciting, and ELITE learning was happening! How can you take your HOOKS to the next level!?!
Other KEY reminders regarding instructional design:
Remember: Depth of Knowledge is less about verbs and more about critical thinking!
DOK 1: Memorize(factual knowledge)
DOK 2: Thinking (procedural knowledge)
DOK 3: Strategic Thinking (strategic knowledge)
DOK 4: NEW Thinking (extended knowledge)
QUICK REVIEW of our instructional strategies 1-4
1. Instructional Objective: Have it visual, aligned, and reference it
2. Suffix/Root Words/Prefix: Have them visual and accessible. Model use
3. Gradual Release: I do, we do together, we do collaboratively, you do. How are you using this in your teaching?
4. Types of Text: How are you using both informational text and literary text
ALSO:
1. Collaborative Planning is made up of three buckets:
Lesson Designs
PLCs
Data Analysis / Digging / DUMPing
Learning with Liz times:
7th grade 8:45-9:15
6th grade 11:45-12:15
8th grade 2:00-2:30
Here is our lesson design template: (make a copy first) https://docs.google.com/a/bryan.k12.ga.us/document/d/1YGAYfD7wP-xieqvJk0PXu7CXLgonm7JfSTQAuTpWOKY/edit?usp=sharing
Think Abouts?
1. What data are you using in your instructional design planning?
2. Are you and your co-teacher using the co-planning document each week to prepare for your instructional designs
3. Are you finding GAPS in your lessons? If so, think about ways we can support you to fill them in.

What I'm Reading.... (The •15)
The Wild Card by Hope and Wade King, teachers at The Ron Clark Academy
"Even if you can't WOW middle-schoolers with wonder, you can surprise them with the unexpected!"
Think about that statement. What can you do to HOOK your scholars into an exciting and engaging lesson? Consider videoing yourself teaching a lesson. That is powerful self reflection. When you play back the video, ask yourself if YOU would want to be a scholar in your classroom? If not, what would you change to amp up your engagement and excitement?
Another key thing to do on the playback is to watch the video with no sound. Last week, I talked about body language and the message that it gives off. When you watch your video played back on silent, how many times do you look happy? How many times do you smile? Does your passion come through in your body language? What kind of energy are you projecting?
If you implement these stratgies, please let me know and let me know your reflections!
