- The Title VI Indian Education Act
- Safe Routes to Schools
Rock Creek Elementary School Principal Tiffany Wiencken gave the Board an overview of the school's student achievement data, successes and challenges. Wiencken said nine out of ten students report that at least one adult cares about them. Wiencken said this is a reflection on the staff and their efforts to make the school feel warm and welcoming.
Rock Creek is committed to the Culture of Care program. Wiencken noted that she selected to send twice the number of staff to trainings to help support students' emotional and behavior needs.
Rock Creek is also working to be considered as an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Candidate School.
Wiencken recognized that there was a dip in student achievement for 5th grade students during the 2016-2017 school year. She said staff and teachers have worked to collaborate and problem solve what is behind the drop.
Whitford Middle School Principal Brian Peerenboom highlighted the school's successes and challenges in his report to the Board.
Peerenboom pointed out that Whitford has made progress in the past three years to reduce suspensions and expulsions. However, attendance is still a challenge. Only 57% of Whitford students missed 10 or fewer days of school. Peerenboom says the school has regularly messaged to parents and students the importance of regular attendance. He is in the process of creating a focus group of students to get a better understanding of why students are missing school and the best ways to reach those students.
Peerenboom also highlighted the growth in Math for economically disadvantaged and ELL students, as well as growth in English Language Arts for special education students.
Staff are focusing on increasing reading comprehension, increasing rigor at the 8th grade level and maintaining and improving positive relationships with students.
