D.W. Daniel High School
February Newsletter
Message from the Principal
During the weeks of February 10th and February 17th, we will be holding Course Selection Nights at DWD. The Course Selection Nights will follow two weeks of in-school course planning with students. Over the last few weeks, students have been able to hear from their teachers about all of the courses offered at DWD. Students have access to information (in their green folders) about course pathways and course information. We have also posted our course catalog through dwdcoursecatalog.com. This shows all of the opportunities we have for students to explore interests and choose courses that will prepare them for their postsecondary futures.
The scheduled Course Selection Nights will be held with the purpose of bringing in parents and guardians to complete the course registration process. We would like for you to come to the school so that you can see what your students have chosen, and provide your input on their selections. Our teachers and counselors will be available to answer questions about course progressions, choices, and Individualized Graduation Plans.
We hope that you and your student will find this process beneficial and that your student will feel empowered by being able to choose the courses that best prepare them for the future, best align them with their passions, and that provide them with opportunities to explore new interests. It is exciting to think about our students making choices for their futures.
I am looking forward to seeing you all at Course Selection Night. Go Lions! One Daniel.

Science National Honor Society
Science National Honor Society
By Mac Martin, Senior SNHS Officer
Dr. Doug McGuff spoke to the Science National Honor Society on January 8th about his career in emergent medicine. He began by detailing what aspects of medicine his job covered and what he was responsible for on a day to day basis. He described emergent medicine as being a field that had a hand in almost every study of medicine due to his job involving treatment of the critically injured. He then went on to detail how he coped with managing such a high stress environment and some strategies he used to remain efficient. He concluded by encouraging the students not to just "check boxes," but to go out and do something they found purposeful instead of something that was expected of them.
The next SNHS meeting will be on Wednesday, February 12th at 5:30pm in Room 339. All ISEF Projects are due. See Schoology or Ms. Tidwell for more details.
The DWD Academic Team competed in the 30th Annual Cavalier Challenge at Dorman High School on Saturday, January 18 and gave a solid performance!

The Varsity A squad ended up in 14th place with Lillie Eldridge, Vivian Dong, John Wang & Nate Snider.
Finally, the JV B team finished up in 13th place in their division with Riya Zutshi, Toby Cox, Henry Turner & Katherine Feng.
Shout out to several members of our Academic Team who dominated the competition on January 21th at TD's Trivia and came away with the W and some swag! They will compete in the championship at Backstreets on March 25th at 6:30. Pictured from left to right are Rachel Cox, Randy Cox, Toby Cox, Henry Turner, Sophie Cox, Lillie Eldridge, Sam Bruce & Katherine Feng.
Ethics Bowl Club
On Saturday, January 25, seven members of the Ethics Bowl Club (Phillip Post, Tuleen Al-nasser, Sophie Cox, Jessica Mason, Grace Nammouz, Dominic Polito, and Annslee Smith) attended the SC High School Ethics Bowl at Wofford College. Daniel was one of eighteen teams that participated. Our team tied in the first round, lost (to a team that made it to the top four) in round two, and won its round-three match up. This placed us in the top half. Not a bad showing for our first ever team competition!
DWD Ethics Bowl Club would like to thank the Daniel Foundation for covering the cost of attending!
History Bowl
The DWD Academic Team took 2nd place at State on Saturday, February 1 in the History Bowl, only losing to the Governor's School in the final round! Pictured from left to right are Sam Bruce, Nate Snider, Jake Chrysostom, Isaac Ruohoniemi, Matthew DeSellier & Blake Davidson. This win qualifies them to compete at Nationals later this year!

Military Ball
The most popular event in D. W Daniel AFJROTC has to be the annual military ball. The military ball is an annual formal function that is planned and attended by the cadets enrolled in D. W. Daniel AFJROTC. Military personnel and male cadets dress in formal uniforms and female cadets wear formal dresses. Every year the military ball committee plans the ball with a secret theme. This year, committee leader Kaici Smith and her team hit a home run. The theme they selected was the Roaring Twenties.
