As nice as it would be to re-enter the world around us slowly after a 5 day break, Brickie sports were in action EVERY NIGHT this past week and our kids were FANTASTIC! Boys hoops and our swimming & diving teams played the role of host while wrestling and girls basketball had the wheels on the bus going 'round and 'round! H-town saw a little bit of everything over the last 6 days, highlighted by a diving championship near Kokomo (... Aruba, Jamaica, oooh I wanna take ya) and an NCAA College football game!

The countdown to Winter Break is 2 weeks ... the countdown to BricksCenter ends now!

Tuesday's 1st conference meet of the season was coed as our boys joined the girls in facing KV & Lowell. With 1 meet under their swim caps already, the Brickies were anxious to get back in! Much like the girls, our boys SHINED! Victories from senior Nathaniel Mamushe in both the 200 IM and 100 Fly helped set the tone and 2X state qualifier senior Ethan Ferba set a NEW SCHOOL RECORD in 1 meter diving! Ferba was simply MAGNIFICENT as he threw dive after dive to wrack up a whopping 350.55 points and break the previous record by over 10 points! Our boys earned a split on the night as they defeated KV 111-69, but fell to Lowell 65-118. Lots of potential in this group ... they are clearly putting in the WORK WORK WORK to be their best!

Mamushe took 1st in the 100 Fly and the 200 Free Relay team consisting of Mamushe, Sy, Kertz & Fifer also grabbed glory with a win! Ferba & Robles (aka "the two Ethans") were MAGNIFICENT on the board in going 1-2 for the 2nd consecutive meet ... clearly they both have a license to DIVE :)

#JUSTKEEPSWIMMING

On Saturday, Hobart took 6 divers (2 boys, 4 girls) to Western High School near Kokomo to compete in their 1st 11-dive meet of the season. In diving, dual meets are only 6 dives, but once the post-season begins, everything involves making 11 dives ... so getting some experience early in the year should prove beneficial when February and March role around.

Oh ya ... and the Brickies WON!! The girls placed 1ST OVERALL with Arias (3rd), Morgan (4th) and senior Autumn Turley (6th) all earning podium finishes! On the boys side, it was Hobart taking 2nd place with only 2 boys scoring - INCREDIBLE! Ferba actually had the highest scoring dive of the entire meet and finished 2nd overall - just 8pts behind one of Indiana's very best! WHAT A PERFORMANCE!!

Wresting

Well Brickie fans ... wrasslin' is back! On Saturday, the Hobart grapplers headed west on the BrickRode to St. John and the destination was Lake Central High School for the Harvest Classic. This was the first meet of the season for these guys and with area powerhouse programs like Portage and Lake Central competing ... along with the monster from Mishawaka (Penn High School) ... our boys were put to the test!

After a month of practice, the Brickies were hungry (... isn't that always the case for wrestlers?) and competed extremely well in their season opener! Junior Devin Wible ... a 2021 state qualifier last winter ... WON the 132-lb TITLE with a 4-0 record on the day! Hobart also got 2nd place finishes from seniors Trevor Schammert (113), Donovan Ruiz (126) and another 2021 state qualifier, Jake Simpson (182)! Freshman Aiden Costello also placed 2nd in his first high school meet! Overall, the Brickies finished with 223 team points to place 2nd in the 11-team field! Portage won the overall title with a team total of 231.5 points ... Penn placed 3rd and the host Lake Central Indians were 4th. Our boys were clinging to a slim lead with just a few matches remaining, but Portage secured victories in both of their bouts and earned a hard fought victory.

Here is the breakdown by weight-class for those who made the medal stand:

106 - freshman Seth Aubin - 5th

113 - senior Trevor Schammert - 2nd

120 - freshman Daniel Mata - 7th

126 - senior Donovan Ruiz - 2nd

132 - junior Devin Wible - CHAMPION

138 - junior Jonny McGill - 7th

145 - junior Auggie Verduzco - 8th

152 - freshman Aiden Costello - 2nd

160 - junior Owen Gniadek - 4th

170 - senior Jeff Fay - 5th

182 - senior Jake Simpson - 2nd

195 - senior Ryan Flores - 4th

220 - senior Ashton Battistella - 5th

The 1st stop on the 2021-2022 #BRICKRODE was a good one. Next week the Brickies travel to Lowell for the first NCC dual meet of the year and then head to Merrillville for the Tom Cameron Invite. Looks like a great week to be a wrestler since there are TWWWOOOOOOOO matches! LET'S GO BRICKS!

Girls

On Tuesday, Hobart hit the road to Porter County to face Portage in a non-conference game. It was a chance for the Lady Brickies to keep the momentum going after last Saturday's thrashing of Calumet. Unfortunately, it was the Lady Indians who saw the nets swish again and again as they built a commanding 44-17 lead at the half. The Lady Brickies tried to claw back into it in the 3rd quarter, but just never could quite get much going and ultimately lost a tough one 68-35. Junior Asia Donald led Hobart with a team-high 20 points in the loss.

Friday night, the Lady Brickies were back in action against NCC rival Munster. Similar to Tuesday's contest, Hobart got a slow start out of the gate and trailed 25-11 at the end of the 1st. Once again, our girls had to try and claw their way back into it, but this time THEY DID! Behind a COLOSSAL EFFORT from everyone on the floor, the Lady Brickies BATTLED ... won the 2nd quarter 15-13, lost the 3rd 15-19, and then exhausted every ounce of energy they had in the final period ... winning the 4th quarter 22-11 in a mad dash to the finish!! Donald poured in 19 points in the final 8 minutes to help the cause, but it just was not enough as Munster hung on for dear life and won 66-61. WHAT A COMEBACK! For the game, Donald scored what is believed to be a SCHOOL RECORD 42 points!! Her sister Amarea added 6 points and sophomore Jesse Neace scored 7.

The Lady Brickies are currently 4-5 on the season and 0-1 in NCC play. Our girls have shown flashes ... particularly that 4th quarter against Munster. If they can find some more consistency, they could be a dangerous team moving forward. A home contest against Kankakee Valley awaits on Friday. LET'S DO THIS GIRLS!!!

Boys

With only 1 game on the slate the past week, Hobart was ALL-IN on Wednesday night!

The Brickie cagers welcomed South Central to The Friendly City for a midweek non-conference game with the Satellites entering undefeated at 1-0 and our boys looking to add another "L" to the spelling of their mascot :). In a very physical 1st half of play, junior forward Keith Mullins dropped 20 points to help the Brickies build a slim 3-pt lead at 33-30. In the 2nd half, it seemed clear that the depth of Hobart and the physicality of the game began to wear down South Central. By the end of the 3rd quarter, the Brickie advantage had ballooned to 16 points at 52-36!! Our boys played TENACIOUS D-D-D-DEFENSE, cleared the boards when the Satellites missed, and RAN in transition for easy baskets!! In the half court, they continuously found Mullins in the paint and took advantage of the South Central size disadvantage time and time again! Final score: Hobart 67, South Central 48

Mullins had a MONSTER game finishing with a career high 35 points to go along with 9 rebounds!! Freshman Noah Ehrlich snagged 5 rebounds and dished out 5 assists ... seniors Miki Djankovich and Josh Tejeda scored 11 and 9 points respectively ... and classmate Jaydon Hence really filled up the stat sheet with 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 lost tooth!!

Hobart is off to a 2-1 start this winter and will play their first road contest of the year on Tuesday over at Portage. DON'T STOP NOW BOYS!!

America's Crossroads Bowl

On Saturday, December 4th, Hobart High School ... partnering with the City of Hobart and the South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority ... hosted America's Crossroads Bowl for the 2nd time in 3 years!

The ACB is an NCAA Division II game that matches a top team from the GLVC with a top team from the GMAC. This year's edition featured Truman State University from the GLVC (Great Lakes Valley Conference) and Hillsdale College from the GMAC (Great Midwest Athletic Conference). Each team narrowly missed out on the NCAA Division II Playoffs, which earned them an invite to this one-of-a-kind experience! The teams arrived in town on Thursday night ... had a walk-through practice on Friday @ The Brickyard along with breakfast at the Hobart Community Center ... joined SCOH elementary students for some fun that afternoon ... attended a banquet on Friday night ... enjoyed a Saturday breakfast at HHS ... and FINALLY got to play some football on Saturday afternoon!

It was a BEAUTIFUL day in DA REGION for some college football (sunny & above freezing) and those in attendance were treated to ONE HECKUVA FOOTBALL GAME!! Before kickoff, the SCOH's own Diane Perigo delighted fans with a STUNNING rendition of the National Anthem! In a tight first half of play, Truman State blew the game open in the final 2 quarters and came out victorious by a final score of 34-17! It was the Bulldogs 9th win of the season and their 2nd straight ACB VICTORY! That's right, they were here back in 2019 and defeated Ohio Dominican 21-7 in the 1st ever college bowl game held in the Hoosier state!!

Many thanks to the City of Hobart, the SSCVA, the SCOH, and EVERYONE else who played a role in bringing this event to LIFE! It was AWESOME!!
