What We've Been Up To
In math, students are finally beginning the somewhat dreaded unit of multiplication and division. Mrs. Trayer is hard at work teaching students many different strategies for multiplication and division problems. Though third graders are expected to know their multiplication tables by the end of the year.
In history/science, we completed our benchmarks in history and science on Friday. We are currently working on our cycles unit, which includes life cycles, day and night, seasons, moon phases, and tides. We made our moon viewers to help identify the correct moon phase, and will wrap up on Thursday when we take our end-of-unit test. That will finish our science instruction for the second nine weeks. WOAH. Upon our return from Thanksgiving break, we will jump right in to learning about explorers.
In reading we have officially transitioned into nonfiction. In read aloud, we are learning about the various text features that help us better comprehend nonfiction material. In reading groups, we are focusing on using table of contents, indicies, and glossaries. Next week we will have some Thanksgiving-themed reading review.
In writing, we are currently learning about how to make nouns possessive, or show ownership. We will continue to work on that through the end of this week, and beginning the first week of December we will review contractions. We are also discussing expository writing, and are working on writing about our favorite holiday. This piece is meant to be an introduction to paragraph writing using the four-square model. December will be busy, as we will begin our "How To" unit which incorporates multi-paragraph expression. I'm excited to get started!
