Kicking off a New Year in K
The kindergarten team is excited to get to know all of the students this year, but first we want you to get to know us!
In room 109 we welcome Mrs. Mary Kay Avula. She is both a Chimborazo parent and teacher! She lives in Church Hill with her husband, 5 kids (two of them attend Chimborazo), and dog! She was born and raised in RVA and received both a Bachelors of Arts and Masters in Teaching from UVA. She has taught Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades in Albemarle Co, Henrico Co, and now Richmond Public Schools. She loves books, reading, and teaching reading! When she is not teaching or reading, her favorite things to do are spend time with family, travel and relax at the beach.
In room 110 we have Ms. Katie Porter. This is Ms. Porter's 4th year teaching at Chimborazo! She is happy to be back in kindergarten after a year in first grade! When she is not at school teaching, she loves to spend time with family and friends! Her favorite place to be is at her family's beach house in the Outer Banks and while there she loves to read! Chick fil a, donuts, and Target are a few of her favorite things! She is so excited for the school year and getting to know the awesome students!!
In room 111 we have Ms. Emily Ladd. Ms. Ladd has been at Chimborazo for 9 years. She loves being in Kindergarten and is so glad to be back after trying out 1st grade. She is a graduate of Longwood University and is currently working on her Masters in Early Childhood Education. Ms. Ladd is blessed to have a very supportive family, especially her dad, Mr. Ladd who is frequently seen helping out at Chimborazo. When she is not hanging out with kindergarten students, you can find her playing with her dog Charlee or rock climbing.
In room 112 we have Ms. Raven Parham and Mr. Justin Baber, Ms Parham has been teaching at Chimborazo for 6 years now. She is a graduate of Old Dominion University and has her masters degree as well. She loves teaching and developing creative plans to engage students. Her favorite thing? Taking care of her sweet baby girl, Alivia.
Mr. Baber is joining us from the Richmond Teacher Residency program at VCU. He has a loving wife of 3 years and two dogs, Rascal, and Scrappy. He spends his free time playing board games, video games, and bowling. He enjoys technology and all of its uses to make life and learning more accessible.

Back to School Night
What are we Learning?
In Language Arts we will be focusing on learning the names and sounds of all of the letters. We will be practicing writing first names and the letters of the alphabet. Please use the video above to help your student review letters and sounds.
In math we will start with calendar and learning the months of the year and days of the week. We will move into sorting objects by different attributes before making various kinds of patterns.
In Science we will learning about scientific investigation and using our observation skills while doing science experiments.
Social Studies we will start by learning the importance of being a good citizen in our community.
