NEWS FLASH! January 7th-January 11th
Happy Holidays!
We want to wish all our families a very happy holiday season. We have loved working with your children during the first part the school year of 2018. We are looking forward to continuing working with your children in 2019! You may have not noticed how much they have grown in the past few months. This is truly the magic of first grade. Please be safe over the break and we will see you in 2019!

Winter Break Homework
We are so very happy with how hard your children are working as we end the 9 weeks.
We have had parents request homework for the break. Breaks from a child’s normal routine can be great. Everyone will get a chance to recharge, play and spend time with family. By stepping away from learning for too long can weaken a student’s reading skills. We encourage a balance of relaxing and constructive activities during winter break.
Here are some of the best ways to do both on your holiday vacation:
READ, READ, READ.....
- School Library Books- We want your children to read. Mrs. Moore is excited to help us encourage your children's love for reading. She did not have to inventor the library before break-that meant our children got to take home library books. We ask if you are planning on traveling long distances that you leave your child's library book at home. This will ensure that it does not get misplaced. The next thing is keeping the book safe. Please read and read again but ensure that is can not be lost, damaged by younger siblings, or pets. Also please that the books stay away from food, drinks, rain and bathtubs. Remember BINGO CARDS for Mrs. Moore are due back January 7th for prizes.
•Guided Reading Bag Have NEW BOOKS and BOOK LOGS to record READING.
Have your child read to you - 10 minutes a day over the break. This will help your child.
We highly recommend the “WINTER READING BINGO” card that Mrs. Moore sent- in Tuesday News Day Folder- LIME GREEN. We have also attached as a PDF.
Here is the grade level challenge. Use the Winter Reading Bingo sheet and post pictures to Mrs. Freedenberg's Facebook page- TEACHERROZ –of your child reading. The class with the most pictures will get a popcorn party. Remember to use your teachers name in the post!
•Sight Words-work on sight words. Sight words are very important for your child to master, because 75% of the words are used in beginning child’s READING. Many of the “sight words” do not follow the basic phonic principles. Many can not be “sounded out “. The first 100 sight words represent over 50% of English text, a child who has mastered the list of sight words can already recognize at least ½ of a sentence.
We have the list of the sight words for you to review or get head for next semester. We have posted list 1-15 which were this semesters and next semesters list 16-30. We have attached as PDFs.
