Safety Protocols

The health and safety of our students and staff is our primary focus. Working with the St. Mary's County Health Department, SMCPS has the following protocols in place for student and staff safety when entering school buildings.

  • Hand Washing: Promoting frequent hand washing throughout the day, especially before and after meals.
  • Physical Distancing: Emphasizing increased spacing in the building and in classrooms with fewer students in spaces, including a hybrid A/B schedule.
  • Cleaning: Cleaning and disinfecting facilities, buses, with an emphasis on frequently touched areas.
  • Face Coverings: Wearing masks during the school day and on buses.
  • Hand Sanitizer: Providing hand sanitizer and hand sanitizing stations, as appropriate, with at building entrances and in classrooms and shared spaces.
  • Training: Providing ongoing training on COVID-19 prevention practices, including social distancing and face-covering use. Signage and ongoing communication will supplement and reinforce training.

What Do the Safety Protocols Look Like in School?

Health Department Offers Flu Clinics

The St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) is partnering with St. Mary’s County Public Schools to offer free drive-thru flu vaccine clinics for children (ages 3 – 18 years) at locations throughout the county. Children must be residents of St. Mary’s County though they do not need to be enrolled in the public school system. Advance registration is required at www.marylandvax.org in order to ensure adequate vaccine supply:

Computers and BYOD

When students return, SMCPS will have available devices (e.g., laptops) for students to use. These laptops will have the appropriate software needed for the instructional program. Schools will communicate how materials will be distributed. Students are responsible for the care - and charging - of laptops or other devices and should bring those materials to school each day. If students prefer to bring their own device, SMCPS will not be able to provide IT support for software or hardware issues. SMCPS devices will automatically connect to the SMCPS network. Information for connecting personal devices can be found at https://www.smcps.org/dss/its/connecting-online.
