Boko Haram
Boko Haram, which was founded in 2002, is a group of militant Islamist.
What is their purpose?
Boko Haram, lead by Abubakra Shekau, is trying to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state. Also they are opposed to "western teachings", instead they want to spread the prophets teachings and jihad.
What have they done?
The group first campaigned violence after the police killed Boko Harams former leader, Abubakar Shekau. Since then they have caused at least 350 raids and bombings between 2013 and 2014, killing at least 5,400 civilians. Last April they kidnapped 276 girls from Chibok Government Girls Secondary School. Some girls escaped but 219 are still missing. A video was posted online of Abubakar Shekau claiming the girls were forced into marriage, but this claim hasn't been confirmed.
How are they being stopped?
The government of Nigeria has said they are making international human rights treaties part of national laws and adding security forces. Although they are adding security forces, members of the military and police are continuously violators and almost always get away with their crimes.
