Holy Spirit Newsletter
Term 3 - Tuesday 13th August, 2019 - Week 4
School Motto
Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School is committed to the pursuit of Christian Truth & Excellence.
All members of the school community are encouraged to develop their potential and special qualities in an environment centred on Christ.
Prayer for the Assumption of Mary
Father in heaven,
all creation rightly gives you praise,
for all life and all holiness come from you.
In the plan of your wisdom
she who bore the Christ in her womb
was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven.
May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness
and join in her hymn of endless love and praise.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
From The Principal
Dear Parents
What a big week we had last week with our Electric Spirits performing live on stage last Thursday at the Prendiville College Auditorium. I commend them all on the high level of performance with the vocals and instrumentals working well together. A big thankyou to Dom Papa and Eleanor Milne who prepared the children so well. I am looking forward to a few more performances before the year ends.
St Dominic’s Day always creates great excitement each year and this time was no exception. The creative stalls and fun activities for the children helped raise over $400.00 each for Life-Link and Wheel Chairs for Kids. This is terrific in a challenging financial environment and I thank you all for supporting your children and assisting us in our efforts to help these worthy causes each year.
The interschool phase of Speak-Up 2019 takes place tomorrow at the Masonic Hall in Scarborough. We all wish Oscar Vaz (Oscar for PM), Isabella Inglis (Dreams) and Charlotte Nutt (Gender Inequality) all the very best as they battle it out with the other schools in what is a fantastic opportunity to develop confidence and skills in public speaking.
Last week we said farewell to our visitors from China. Maria, Yu, Skye, Louise, Chou, Michelle, Nicki, Bob and Baron. The children had a fantastic time here at Holy Spirit and will remember their experience for a long time to come. Michelle and Nicki thanked the whole school in a beautiful speech at the conclusion of Mass last Friday and their parents were so appreciative of the welcome they all received and the effort made by our students to help make the immersion and cultural exchange successful. Thanks to all our staff for accommodating the students and looking after them over their two weeks here at Holy Spirit.
Thank you to the staff and parents for their kind messages I received for the forty years in education milestone. It just doesn’t seem that long ago when I first stepped into a Year Three Classroom at Good Shepherd in Kelmscott in 1979 to begin what has turned out to be a lasting career and vocation. Over the years there have been many great stories and experiences with students from the city and country towns. With all the changes, re-locations, education trends and challenging moments I still wouldn’t swap my experience for any other and will continue to treasure the memories from Holy Spirit, Margaret River, Bridgetown and Kelmscott.
I will be away next week with a group of Principals visiting schools in Brisbane and attending a three day retreat at the Marist Brothers Hermitage in Mittagong NSW. Natalie Sims will be Acting Principal in my absence.
Wishing you all a great week!
Regards,
Steve Versteegen - Principal

HASS CONFERENCE
On Friday 2nd August Year 5 students, Alex Tang, James Gunasekera, Zac Harold and Iggy Jerrat along with Mr Colace, were invited to attend the HASS (History and Social Sciences) Conference at the State Library in Perth to display their Rottnest Island Fun Park. The conference ran for two days and was a chance for schools to showcase what they had been learning in HASS.
In Term 2, the Year Five class learned about the redevelopment of land in Geography. As part of this unit the children were posed the question ‘Should Rottnest island be redeveloped into a theme park?’
The children used these responses to write persuasive arguments and build model designs of what a theme park might look like. The HASS conference presented these students with a chance to communicate with Humanities teachers from other schools to discuss the process they had undertaken to create their model designs and the pros and cons of a theme park being built on Rottnest island.

P&F Funds in Action!
The reason for the change was that the room was only getting used 2 hours a week and we wanted to move one of our pianos (coming soon) in there to make it a combined music/P&F room. This will open up the current "Music" classroom on Thursdays and Fridays so we can provide a larger space for OT & Speech Therapy.
A massive thank you to handyman extraordinaire Nino for giving up so much of his time and for perfecting Marcia's & my humble paint job and making the room look brand new!
Thank you to Marcia and Diana Rigg for also spending a few hours one weekend sorting through uniforms to donate.
Lastly, thank you to the P&F for funding this project. What a lick of paint & new flooring can do and certainly gives us some inspiration for the music and art rooms to come!
Sam
Nino hard a work!
