"Auburn Pride Starts Inside"
April 16, 2021
Dear Auburn Families,
I have been observing in classrooms, both in seat and remote, the last few weeks and have been amazed at the teaching and learning that is happening. Last night at the PTO meeting, we discussed how long this year has been for all involved and how appreciative we are to the teachers for continuing to create a safe space filled with joy and learning. Our sense of community has never been stronger at Auburn and it is due to our home school partnership. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the teachers and to all of our families for supporting one another and continuing to focus on our students' needs. What can I say? #AuburnRocks
The third through fifth grade students had the opportunity to attend a virtual field trip to the DSO this week. The performance, What is Jazz, featured Wynston Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. We had wonderful feedback from the students and staff on this experience. I want to thank Ms. Erspamer for bringing the arts into our classrooms at a time when we can't go out for these experiences!
Our Yearbooks are on sale and the deadline to purchase is Monday! Please see the link below to place your order. This will be a very unique yearbook for a very unique year and you don't want to miss out!
And last, but not least, I'm going to leave you with a little teaser...stay tuned for a huge honor and celebration that Auburn will be receiving based on our commitment to equity. I'm so excited!!
Congratulations to 5th Grade Students - Ariana and Andrej

Positivity Project ~ APPRECIATION OF BEAUTY & EXCELLENCE
Appreciation of beauty and excellence is the ability to identify and enjoy that which is admirable in the world. There are three types of goodness in which positive psychology focuses: physical beauty (e.g. a sunset, song, or building); an exceptional skill or talent; and moral goodness (e.g. a character strength). Appreciation of beauty can generate awe; appreciation of a skill can
generate admiration; and appreciation of moral goodness can generate moral elevation. All of these feelings (awe, admiration, and moral elevation) help us forget ourselves and find increased joy and meaning in the world.

Student-Centered District School Calendar 2021-22
After months of work and collaboration with stakeholders around the Avondale School District, we have developed our calendar for the 2021-2022 school year.
While adhering to government mandates and myriad other details, the calendar reflects our commitment to student and staff growth. It contains opportunities for student remediation and enrichment through staff-provided intersessions that we feel will help reverse the academic losses that may have occurred for some students over the past year. The new calendar also honors our commitment to our staff members to provide opportunities for them to advance their teaching skills and enhance their content knowledge in the ever-changing world of education.
The new calendar is considered student-centered but we feel that it really is learning community-centered as it is designed to create an environment conducive to a healthy and intentional educational experience for all.
If you are interested in participating in a committee to discuss and plan intersession and enrichment opportunities for our students please fill out the form at this link: Intersession Planning Committee Interest Form.
The new calendar is attached to this email so that you can begin to plan your coming months. Barring any surprise mandates from the state or the occurrence of national or global events that may interrupt our 2021-2022 school year, there should be little to no changes to it.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
James V. Schwarz, Ph.D.
