Spring Testing (Forward Exam and MAP Testing)
The spring state testing window will open for 3rd-8th graders starting the week of March 18th. This is the fourth year Wisconsin is administering the Forward Exam. This test replaces the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam which had been Wisconsin’s main accountability test for many years.
We recommend that students try the practice test that is available online to familiarize themselves with the format of the test questions. We are providing you with the direct link to the practice test below, but you may also read more about the Forward Exam through the Wisconsin DPI website. Practice Test: https://wbte.drcedirect.com/WI/portals/wi
As with the WKCE, students in grades 3-8th will be tested in ELA (reading & writing) and math. Students in grades 4 & 8 will also be tested in science and social studies. Testing will occur at each grade level over several days between March 18th-May 8th.
Please take special notice of when your child’s class will be testing!
The school-wide testing schedule was sent home in the Pegasus Flyers and is also below. Please note that make-up testing is hard on students as they miss regular classroom instruction and are responsible for the curriculum they missed. Please avoid making appointments during testing.
Thank you for not taking your child out of school when their class is testing!

Band Opportunity
Saturday, April 6, 2019
9:00 am -- 9:00 pm
Appleton North High School
Dear AASD Band Students and Parents:
The 6th Annual Band Together Music Marathon will be held this spring, and we would like to share some information about the marathon. The event has been very successful over the past few years, and I would like to thank all those involved for their contributions and time. I hope to exceed expectations again this year. All monies raised at this event go directly back to the band programs. With that said here is a quick explanation about the day.
Students from all levels (high school, middle school, and elementary schools) will begin performances at 9:00 am. All groups will have a scheduled time to be at Appleton North High School and the schedule will be posted on the AASD website and Facebook page. Your student’s band director also has this information. There are a number of different types of music that will be played throughout the day. Our hope is that you and your child will stay and enjoy everything the day has to offer. This includes music, a bucket raffle, and food. We also encourage you to share this date with other family members, neighbors, and friends who might enjoy it. There is no charge to get in, but we do hope that those who join us will be very tempted to partake in the raffle…as our items are top notch!
Now that I mentioned items for the raffle, I’m leading into my next pitch….We need items! No donation is too big or too small. We will put donated items together and make them so fantastic that no one will be able to resist joining in the raffle. If you are a patron of a local business, those are the folks to talk to. If you would rather put a basket together or go in on a donation with several other families, that is awesome. We have had people donate time for yard work, prepare a meal for a group of six, or even donate a load of firewood. Smaller items and gift cards are also great to have. If there are any questions about this, please contact me.
Lastly I am looking for volunteers to help during the day at the Music Marathon. Any amount of time you can offer is appreciated and jobs range from selling raffle tickets, food concession stand, or monitoring the item tables.
This is a great event for kids and families and I truly enjoy it even though I have no children in the band program. I found the experience to be worthwhile and rewarding and enjoy not only seeing the kids play but also seeing them interact and work together for their own cause. Thank you for encouraging your kids and here’s to hoping we can work together to make something wonderful happen!
Sincerely, Tracey Rigstad and your Fearless Band Directors,
Caitlin Acy, Amanda Balane, Julie Brown, Matt DiPietro, Eric Ihde, Stacy Juhl, Janice Parker, Daniel Quiroga, Katie Sohn, Jim Thaldorf, Tracey Rigstad – Music Marathon Raffle Coordinator 920-428-3162 (cell) or 920-731-8073 (home)

Arts & Culture Fair
The fair combines the former International Fair and Fine Arts Night into one event. The fine arts portion of the fair will be prepared by students within the school day and will be led by Mrs. Grover (music) and Mrs. Eastman (fine arts). The culture portion of the fair will be run similarly to how the International Fair was run with parent volunteer presenters to provide educational opportunities about their family's culture/heritage.
Are you willing to share your culture with others? Do you have experience with another culture? Please consider sponsoring a booth at Classical School's Arts & Culture Fair and sharing one of the following aspects from your family's culture:
*craft *game or sport *food or drink *custom or tradition
*artifacts *holiday * famous person *story or legend
*clothing *history *other
*dance/music/songs (Please note: dance/music/song booths will be held in a separate location inside the school.)
Due to limited space and in order to ensure a variety of activities/cultures represented, not all ideas will be chosen. We are looking for sponsors for 20 booths. Feel free to coordinate a booth with another family or two.
Please note: The Arts & Culture Fair will feature a new format this year combining what was formerly known as "Fine Arts Night" and "International Fair." Therefore, musical performances will be located in the Forum, art will be displaced throughout the hallways of the entire school, and families will set up their cultural booths in various classrooms.
Volunteers are also needed for set up, clean up, supervision, passport table. Please follow the link to sign up to sponsor a booth or volunteer to help:

HEALTH SERVICES
HEAD LICE - An Unwelcome Visitor
Head lice are small (1-2 mm in length), wingless, gray-brown, hairy, flat insects that live in human hair. Lice hatch from small eggs, called nits, which attach firmly to the hair shaft. It is important to remember that lice do not jump, hop, or fly. They only crawl. Anyone, adult or child, can get head lice. They carry no disease and are not related to cleanliness. The main symptom of head lice infestation is an itchy scalp.
Although transmission can occur in the school setting, it is not likely because lice are spread by direct head-to-head contact or by the sharing of close personal items (such as clothing, hats, combs, brushes, hair accessories, etc.). In general children do not engage in such close physical contact or the sharing of personal items in the school setting.
To minimize the risk of contracting head lice:
● Remind children not to use combs, brushes, hats, scarves, hair accessories, etc., that belong to other people.
● Use caution when trying on clothing at stores.
● Tuck hats into jacket sleeves and hang separately from others especially at a church, a clinic, or other public places. Tell children not to snuggle down into upholstered furniture in public places (such as movie theaters, office waiting rooms, or libraries).
● Discourage your children from lying on the carpet in public places.
● Do not allow headgear to go from head to head during sporting activities.
● If you are hosting a sleepover party for children, do not allow the guests to stack sleeping bags, pillows, overnight bags, etc., in one pile, and remind the children to use only their own items. Talk with your child about these preventative measures.
If you discover head lice on your child, don’t panic! Be sure to notify parents of close playmates. There are many excellent over-the-counter preparations available for the treatment of head lice. Be sure to follow the package instructions EXACTLY as written. If you want further information, please contact the nurse at your child’s school.
2019 Elementary Battle of the Books
I want to commend everyone for their effort this year with BOB! You should be proud of yourselves for your commitment and effort that you put into BOB. We had six teams that competed this year. Even though it was a short season, they gave it their all! It was close, but we have a team that will represent Classical School at the state BOB competition. The winning team was the Bookworms, which consists of Grace Hartjes, Maya Pack, Avalon McDuffie, and Hayleigh Forster! Congratulations, Booksworms! Again, thanks to all the students who read all their books and studied hard! I enjoyed working with all of you so much. Keep up your reading! See you next year!

Tryouts will be held Monday, March 11, Tuesday, March 12, Thursday, March 14, and Friday, March 15 in the gym from 3:30 pm -- 5:00 pm. Practices prior to spring break will be from 3:30 pm -- 5:00 pm on Monday 3/18 and Wednesday 3/20. Practices will continue for those who make the team every week day after spring break from 3:30 -- 5:00 pm.
When you come to tryouts, make sure you are wearing comfortable athletic clothing (shorts and t-shirt) and gym shoes.
After tryouts 36 players will be selected and divided into two teams of equal ability. If a student is chosen for one of the teams, it is expected that she will be at ALL practices and games as well as pay the $40.00 participation fee (payable to Classical School and due after the student makes the team). Other team commitments (e.g. competitive soccer, softball, etc.) need to be secondary. Occasional conflicts do arise and can be worked out with the coach (family trip, etc.).
There are several things the coaches look for when making the decision on whom makes the team. good listening skills, basic game knowledge, enthusiasm for the sport, coachability, athletic ability and potential will all be considered. Keep these things in mind while trying out: try your best, hustle (even when the coach is not looking), push yourself, demonstrate a good unselfish attitude, show enthusiasm, and work on developing passing, setting, and serving skills.

Thank you to all of our middle school parents and judge volunteers for helping make our Science Fair a success.
The Helen & Ade Dillon Award
This award recognizes an AASD staff member who encourages a balanced life for students through excellence in education and involvement in student activities outside of the classroom. This staff member takes a personal interest in students’ moral, mental, and physical development, thereby enhancing students’ life skills for continued development of academics, fitness, and citizenship. This individual will have successfully completed a minimum of five years employment with the Appleton Area School District. One unrestricted cash award of $1,000 will be presented to a recipient at the Appleton Area School District All Staff Gathering at the beginning of the school year.
Nomination forms can be found outside the Classical School office. Nominations for this award must be received by Ruth Woelfel in the AASD School Services’ Office at the Scullen Leadership Center no later than June 15th. Any district employee, student, parent, or community member may nominate an AASD staff member.
Mielke Educator of the Year Award
Since 1983 outstanding AASD educators have been recognized through the Mielke Educator of the Year Awards. Isn’t there someone you have worked with who you believe should be nominated for this award? To nominate an educator does take time and effort. The committee will want to know the nominee’s biography, his/her philosophy, and asks for letters of recommendation. However, when all the information is completed and placed in a binder, it becomes a tribute of the nominee’s contributions to education and can be a keepsake of their AASD career. Link to access more information and forms:
*If you are interested in nominating a teacher or other staff member, you can find the nomination information and forms outside the Classical School office. The deadline is June 15th.
