Summer PD Opportunities
Something for everyone
Dear School Folks,
School's either out or almost out, so it's time to exhale, let your shoulders drop, and spend some time on yourself. Congratulations on making it through the weirdest, most stressful spring ever. Now, let's let the recovery begin! This newsletter has a wealth of free or low-cost PD opportunities for all kinds of teachers, as well as some fun self-care suggestions. Feel free to share this newsletter with your colleagues, your team, or your faculty.
We don't know what the fall will bring, but it shouldn't stop us from moving forward.
Happy summer,
Your friends at Smore
Equity
Check out The Equity Learning Institute
Free and low-cost courses that cover the basics and give teachers/school leaders a framework for developing an equity-oriented practice in their schools and classrooms.
Learn More About Students with Disability
A Twitter movement focused on equity across all domains, #CleartheAirEdu offers a special lineup about students with disability.
- First, a film about a group of teen campers fighting for disability rights.
- A viewing guide, for discussion.
- A Zoom conversation with one of the activists (7/1). Register here.
- Lastly, if you'd like to engage in all of this with friends or colleagues, try watching the film together, from a social distance of course, on Netflix Party.
If you're a STEM teacher, here are some opportunities for you...
- Teach math? Lead a session or learn from your colleagues around the country; either way, you'll find it hard to choose which session you want to attend. Check it out here!
- If you're a TI user, or wanna be one, TI offers great teacher-led online courses -- see what they've got to teach you.
- These courses cost $99, but if you want to learn more about developing a mathematical mindset in your students, this is the place! Take a look-see.
- The Inclusive STEM & CS Summit happening on 6/20 offers an opportunity to learn from talented colleagues often left off the lecture circuit. Here's the registration link.
The Future of Learning
- Since no one knows what fall will bring, free CodeCamp is bringing a free no-code summer course to teachers in August, with the intention of teaching low tech skills and tools to stock your remote teaching toolbox.
- Stanford Education Professor Jo Boaler is launching a free online course that focuses on applying brain and data science to student learning, for teachers of any subject. Six sessions, starting in July, with a certificate available. Sign up here to be notified.
- Read about the future of education, locally and globally, in this fascinating blog.
Just for Fun
Taking Care of You!
Professional learning isn't just about bolstering your teaching practice or your subject area, it's also about staying enriched, inspired, invigorated, and growing. Here are some creative outlets, if typical PD is just not where your brain is at:
- Cook with Top Chef's top chefs! Free lessons from your favorites here.
- While we're on the subject of cooking, summer is the perfect time for experiments with mixology. Here are some great recipes to pair with your top chef meals.
- And as long as you're mixing up recipes, how about some self-care potions?
- Lastly, poetry is a true source of inspiration, helping us to see the world differently. Here are some perfect poems for summer.
