Scholastic Book Fair
The Gates Mills PTC would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Robin Polack and Racquel Henderson for co-chairing the Scholastic Book Fair this year. They transformed the Idea Lab into a beautiful book filled enchanted forest! They have been working for months on this event and their efforts are appreciated by the staff and students. We would also like to thank the following helpers for their time: Stacie Conway, Nadia Hantus, Patricia Helmerich, Tina Iacampo, Nadia Kobal, Sabrina Savitt, Lindsay Steinbrink and Patti Stephens. A special thanks to all parents and students who purchased books to help support our school! Thanks to their efforts, our teachers were able to purchase books for their classrooms!!
Inside the Idea Lab with Mrs. Stephens
This week in Idea Lab the fourth and fifth graders were able to experiment with some of the new tech toys recently donated by PTC. Students learned the importance of following instructions while using their problem solving skills to build and create with Roller Coaster Challenge, KevaMaker Bot Maze, Origami Airplanes, and Cobble Hill seasonal jigsaw puzzles. The small groups worked cooperatively and did an excellent job collaborating.
On Thursday, all grades were given the opportunity to visit and make purchases at the book fair. We then went into the computer lab where grades two, three, four, and five went to hourofcode.com to continue with their coding exercises. Kindergarten and first grade listened to a seasonal story and did a coloring page. Each class had two raffle winners who got to choose a poster from the book fair as their prize. More posters will be raffled off in the next few days. Thanks to the PTC Book Fair committee and parent volunteers for an enchanting book fair this year!
Mr. D's SE Skills Guidance Updates
I hope everyone had a great week! This past Monday I had the opportunity to work with third, second, first and Kindergarten students at Gates Mills! Here is what the kids worked on…
Grades 2 and 3: In these two grades this week, we continued our work from two weeks ago with the Ingredients for Friendship Lesson! We took some time reviewing the pizzas we created from the lesson before, highlighting the characteristics that will help students make friends, keep friends, and be able to simply get along with others. Along with the pizza lesson the students were able to create a Recipe Card to highlight four good qualities they learned about they feel are important to them. We then discussed and shared as a class.
Grade 1: The students and I took time to talk about the skill of Sharing. For this lesson, we discussed three important rules to help students be able to share in any situation. Following the discussion and practice of the rules, the students and I played a game where the students received a card that said “Fair” and another card that read “Not Fair”. As a class, we then read short scenarios which allowed for the kids to vote on whether what happened in the scenario was fair or not fair. The students and I then discussed why for each.
Kindergarten: In kindergarten this week, we spent the lesson talking about Friends. We read a story called “Twiggle makes Friends”, which took the students on a journey with Twiggle the Turtle as he learned three important things any person can do to make friends, keep friends, and get along with others; play with each other, help one another, and share with others. Finally, the students colored a page from the story highlighting one of those three skills.
If you ever have questions about one of my lessons, please feel free to email me at cdimarino@mayfieldschools.org or call me at (440) 995-7427.
Jingle Bell Ball - Thursday, December 20th
It's Cold Weather Time Again
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to participate in outdoor recess (i.e., coat, hat, gloves, boots, snow pants, etc.). As stated in the handbook: All students are expected to go outside unless the temperature is below 20 degrees or the wind chill is below 10 degrees. Generally, if a child is able to ride the bus and attend school, (s)he should also be able to outside at recess. The only exceptions are: a physician’s request, a written parent request for the day the child returns to school following an illness, or a request by the teacher or Principal.
We have a limited amount of clothing for students to change into shoud they get wet or muddy outside, so please consider sending in an extra set of clothing for their children.
