News from the Lancaster County School District, Feb. 2023

Lancaster County Community,
We spent the day with the Board of Trustees, State, City and County officials brainstorming and planning for the future of Lancaster County School District. It was a great discussion. We look forward to our next planning meeting in March.
We are now accepting nominations for the 2023 Teacher of the Year, another town hall meeting is coming up in the Andrew Jackson area, kindergarten registration kicks off next week and we are celebrating our school counselors! You can find details about all of these things in this month's newsletter below.
Don't forget students have a four-day weekend coming up (February 17 - 20). Thank you for all you do to support our school district. We couldn't do it without you!

LCSD Superintendent

LCSD Teacher of the Year
We are now accepting nominations for the 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year and Beginning Teacher of the Year!
A candidate for Teacher of the Year is a classroom teacher in a public pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, elementary, middle, or secondary school. This includes all subject area teachers, vocational teachers, school librarians, school counselors, curriculum resource teachers, teacher specialists, speech-language pathologists, and lead teachers who are planning to continue in an active teaching status. Active teaching status means that the teacher is planning to continue teaching (e.g. not retiring or moving into an administrative position the following year). The candidate must be a continuing-contract teacher and have direct contact with students a minimum of three hours a day, on average. Nominees must hold a valid South Carolina teaching certificate, with the exception of ROTC teachers who must be qualified by the appropriate area of service, and must not have served as District Teacher of the Year in the same district during the 4 (four) previous years.
You will need to fill out one form for each teacher that you nominate. Click HERE to submit a nomination. Nominations will close on Friday, February 24, 2023 at 5pm.

National School Counseling Week
National School Counseling Week is celebrated across the nation next week, February 6-10. The theme of this year's week is "School Counselors: Helping Students Dream Big."
School counselors are an integral part of the day in every school across the district. One of the most important things school counselors do is help students succeed in school and plan their career. With the aid of a school counselor, students learn to develop effective collaboration and cooperation skills, to practice perseverance, to develop time management and study skills, and to learn self-motivation and self-direction habits.
Reach out to your school counselor and let them know how much you appreciate them!
Project for Youth Art Month
This is an annual joint effort between LCSD, Bob Doster's Backstreet Studio and the city of Lancaster. Every year, the visual art teacher at each school submits art entries from their students with the designated theme. This year's theme is "Under the Sea." Bob's Backstreet Studio judges the artwork and selects the top designs for elementary, middle, and high school. The chosen students, along with other classmates, come to paint their design on a banner at the Lancaster Multipurpose Building. Once the banners are all painted the elementary designs are displayed on the light poles of Downtown Main Street and the middle/high school designs are displayed on the large cube frames in front of the Spring House/Arts Council on Gay Street.
The artwork will be displayed in March as a part of Youth Art Month. Here's a little sneak peek:
