A Message from our Principal- Donna Burke
Today, I spoke to all students about the expectations for our 4th quarter. Just like in sports, I told them that it's tough for many reasons. We are tired, we are busy, and we are looking forward to the summer. However, we have to take time to FOCUS. I told the students, “You have one job….to LEARN! I spent time talking about Academic expectations and Behavior expectations.
For academics, we expect every student to do every assignment. Bottom line-- “do your work” and “do your best." We talked about ACAP testing and iReady testing and our expectation is for all students to meet their individual “growth targets.” One way to do that is to do 2 iReady pathways in Math and Reading each week.
For behavior, we talked about disruptions and how they take away from learning. Some examples I gave are the following:
Talking while the teacher is talking
Interrupting the teacher
Coming to class unprepared
Using the Chromebook inappropriately
Getting up without permission
Being tardy to class
Being out of Dress Code
Being disruptive between classes
Being mean to a classmate
Any and all disruptions to the learning environment take away from the ability for the student to learn and from others to learn.
In summary, for ACADEMICS we asked our students to--
Be prepared for class.
Do their work in all classes.
Give maximum effort.
Do their iReady pathways.
FOCUS on growth in testing.
In summary, for BEHAVIOR we asked our students to--
Eliminate Disruptions.
Make good choices.
Be respectful.
Be kind to one another.
As I told the students, the 4th quarter can be tough, but if we all FOCUS and do our best, it can be better than all of the other 3 quarters put together.

Rising 9th-grade students who indicated on their course selection sheets that they wanted to be placed directly into Spanish 2 or Spanish 2 Accelerated next year (as opposed to taking Spanish 1) must take a Spanish 1 exam.
Students who score a 90% or above will be able to move to Spanish 2 in 9th grade. Students who wish to test into Spanish 2 Accelerated will complete the exam as well as an oral and written assessment and score a 90% or higher. Students will not get credit for Spanish 1 and will still need two years of foreign language for the Hoover City Schools Seal of Scholastic Excellence endorsement.
Students must reach out to the Spanish teacher (Mrs. Raby) to schedule a time to take the Spanish 1 exam. Students must take the test by Friday, April 7th. Thank you!
