The Currywurst
an incredibly delicious story
Introduction
The Currywurst is a famous German speciality that exists since 1949. It is a Fast Food dish that consists in a steamed then fried pork sausage with Curry Ketchup and Curry powder. It is a very common meal in Germany and is often served with fries. In this leaflet, we will travel back in time to when this famous dish was created.
The Currywurst Past
The Currywurst was invented by Herta Heuwer, who obtained ketchup (or Worcestershire sauce) and curry from soldiers. She mixed these ingredients and poured them onto a grilled pork sausage. This was a cheap but very filling snack that sold immediately. In fact, when Hewer started selling Currywurst in a popular district where many workers were rebuilding the devastated Berlin, she even sold up to 10,000 servings per week. Herta patented her curry ketchup sauce, called "Chillup", in 1951.

This is Konnopke's Imbiss, a fast-food stand to sell Currywurst in East Berlin in 1960.
Das Currywurst Museum
There is now also an entire museum dedicated to the Currywurst. It shows the origin of all the ingredients and how they came together to create this famous snack.
