Good Afternoon PCMS Families!

Over the last several weeks, we’re finding ourselves having lots and lots of conversations with our kids about two things: ARE YOU MAKING SOMEONE’S DAY BETTER? and ARE YOU MAKING THE SITUATION BETTER OR WORSE with your actions. We’re seeing a lot, not all, struggle with manners and following simple requests without an eye roll, a snippy comment back, or returning to the same behavior as soon as they’re out of our sight. As we continue to work with our kids on this topic, I’m asking you to ask your child a different question when they come home. Instead of the normal “How was your day?” or “What did you do?” (to which you probably get a 1-word answer between the two, if you’re lucky ;) Instead ask them, “Who did you help today?” or “Who’s day did you make better and how?” These two questions could make such a difference in our classrooms, our school, and way beyond. Kindness is obviously not the only thing we focus on, but it’s a big one!!

Have a wonderful weekend, and since we won’t send a newsletter out next week, have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Future Freshman Day for 8th GRade

Today our 8th graders visited the high school to learn about opportunities available to them next year and throughout their high school career. Not only did they learn about course options, but they also received a tour and talked to current high school students and staff about the various extracurricular activities. Ask your student about Future Freshman Day and their thoughts on possible classes they would like to take next year. Next month, Ms. Schank will begin working with the 8th graders to select their high school courses and fill out their Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP). Look for more information in December.

When you are sending a check to school with your student for lunch, field trips, Chromebook insurance, etc., please make it out to PCR-3 each time. Thank you!

Big picture

We believe that frequent communication on academic progress is critical to student success. You can access your child's grades and view their progress at any time by either logging onto Parent Portal or accessing the Tyler SIS Student 360 app on your mobile device.

Below you will find the link to a useful guide to Parent Portal. Please note that there is a feature that also allows you to receive a report via your email, that shows when students have been absent from a class. Instructions to set this up are on the guide, but here are the steps:

Just like the grade change notifications - after a parent logs in, there should be an icon with your initials in the top right corner of the portal. You can click on that, and then "notification preferences."

For the phone app, to set it is similar - click the three-line menu icon in the top LEFT, then down to Settings, then "notification preferences." This will send an email nightly, which summarizes the student's whole day. We hope you will find this helpful.

We received the results from last week's All-District Band auditions and we are very pleased to share that we have 19 students who were selected for the ensemble. Students worked hard for weeks to learn very challenging music and we are beyond proud of everyone who auditioned and how much they all grew through the process. Students that made the band will now get to participate in the All-District Band clinic and concert on Saturday, December 11 here at Platte County.

Stucco is sponsoring a Turkey Drive from November 15-23. Students can bring in boxed or canned food items during this time. Some examples are canned peaches, canned peas, peanut butter, and other canned/boxed food items. Thank you for your participation and for helping make this drive a success!

Our annual parent survey is now open please click on the button below to begin the survey. Thank you for taking the time to thoughtfully answer each question that applies to your family. Our district, various district departments and programs, and our school use this information to help us improve. Our school’s improvement goals this year include

  • Developing High-Performing Improvement Teams

  • Increasing the Sense of Belonging of Each Student

  • Increasing the Academic Achievement of Each Student

We use a variety of results to measure progress towards these goals including the following parent survey questions:

32. I feel my child is safe at school.

33. I feel my child(s) teachers care about him/her.

34. My child feels a sense of belonging at school.

37. I feel our family is valued and respected by our school.

40. I am a partner with the school with my child’s education.

If you have already completed the survey, you can continue to participate in the Thought Exchange comment section, by clicking here. Participants share thoughts, then rate thoughts shared by others to create themes and help the District prioritize next steps. We encourage you to revisit this exchange and rate additional thoughts as they are entered.

We will close the survey and Thought Exchange on Friday, December 3, 2021. Thank you in advance for your feedback!
