CMS Emergency Alerts
Secure the classroom - medical alert: This is the alert that is used most frequently. It is used when we need to transport a student to the hospital via ambulance. For this alert, staff and students are asked to remain in the classroom and continue teaching. Students and staff are not allowed in the hallways or bathrooms during this alert unless it is a true emergency. This alert allows us to remove a student with maximum privacy for the student and little to no disruption to classes. It also allows paramedics and other service providers access to the student in need.
Secure the Classroom - non-medical alert: Similar to the medical alert, this is used when we have a dis-regulated student or other significant disruption in the hallways. This is also the alert we use for our drills when we bring in drug sniffing dogs. For this alert, students and staff are required to stay in or return to their classrooms immediately and teachers lock their doors. Students and staff are not allowed in the hallway and teachers should remain teaching. This alert allows the administration to resolve any potentially dangerous situation without interference.
Secure the Building: This alert is for a danger outside of the school, for example police activity in the area. For this alert no one is allowed in or out of the building. All doors are checked and any students that might be outside (recess, gym class, etc) are brought inside the school.
Run, Hide, Fight Drills: These drills are used to prepare for a significant threat at the school. We do a Run drill in the fall so that all students know where the rally points are and a "choice" drill in the spring where a situation is called over the PA and students and teachers choose the best course of action - Run/Hide/Fight. Our goal with these drills is to keep them low-key while still ensuring that our student are prepared for this type of an emergency.
Outside of a fire drill (which I think we are all familiar with) these are the majority of the alerts that occur at school. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. At CMS we are very thankful for all of the veterans that have served our country! I hope we all take the opportunity to remember and thank those that serve us over this Veteran's Day weekend.

You can also stay up to date with the CMS PTO by following us on Facebook. You can contact the PTO at coakleypto@gmail.com.
