Poem comparing by Gavin Sekel
tone and word choice
In the poem "Prayer to the Pacific" Leslie Martin thought ocean
is beautiful. She talk about sea turtles and this shows she likes them. Her word choices shows she respects the ocean. In "Sleeping in the Forest" Mary Oliver words make this poem seem sad because it's about dreaming about dying. In line 16 she writes about a "luminous doom." I think the overall attitude in the poem is sad because of her dreams. In line 17 she says, "I had vanished . . . into something better."
figurative language
Personification is used in the beginning of "Sleeping in the Forest" when the author talks about earth having pockets and dark skirts. I think she's pretending the earth is a human. I think the figurative language gives me inspiration by helping me to picture what the poem is about. the author use figurative language to make the poems more interesting.
