Work-Based Learning
Plainview Public Schools will be offering all seniors a Work-Based Learning opportunity (WBL) for the spring semester of the 2021-2022 school year.
Work-Based Learning (WBL) opportunities are part of a planned program of school-site and worksite experiences related to the career interest of the student learner. They are designed to enable the student learner to acquire knowledge and skills in a real work setting. The benefits for the student learner, the school district, and the employer are many as the student learner develops technical, academic, and career readiness skills while participating in meaningful engagement with employers in his/her chosen field of study.
These experiences help connect student learners with employers to prepare them for success in an ever-changing workplace. According to Gallup, business leaders value an internship or work-based learning experience over grades or college major.
Work Based Learning helps student learners:
Strengthen academic, technical, and career readiness (employability) skills
Explore career options
Enhance personal finance knowledge and skills
Foster positive relationships with adults in the chosen field
Observe all aspects of a company’s operation
Develop an awareness of the requirements of careers so they can effectively plan post-secondary and career pursuits
Work Based Learning Foundation Skills:
Attendance and punctuality
Workplace appearance
Accepting direction and constructive criticism
Motivation and taking initiative
Understanding workplace culture, policy, and safety
Seniors will have a chance to take part in (WBL) opportunities on all Fridays in which Plainview Schools are in session. The starting date will be January 7th, 2022. Students will be required to be at the work-based learning site for a total of at least six hours each Friday. Students will be required to stay with the same business/site for a minimum of one quarter or nine weeks.
Students choosing to participate in (WBL) will not miss instructional time on Fridays because no new instruction/material will be presented in their classes on Fridays. Students not participating in WBL opportunities will be in school and will be working on individualized activities related to their chosen field of study or participating in other career exploration activities. Students will be graded on either class participation and/or the completion of their projects.
SCHOOL CANCELLATIONS AND EARLY DISMISSALS
School cancellations, late starts, and/or early releases will be announced via the phone messaging system and also on the following radio stations: KNEN, Norfolk, KEXL/WJAG-Norfolk and WNAX-Yankton. If no report is heard, it can be assumed that school will be in session. Now is a great time to make sure that the school has accurate and up-to-date phone numbers for you. Please call Mrs. Haase to check your contact information if your number has recently changed.
While it is never an ideal situation, there are times that school may need to be released early due to an impending storm. Please take some time to develop a plan for your children to follow if school is ever released early for inclimate weather.
