Weekly News & Notes
Updates from UHS: February 4, 2022
Brief Updates
1. On Monday, UHS hosted our principals' meeting, and Ms. Bellville, Ms. DeMarco, Dr. Dwyer, and Dr. Dillon joined our school administration in visiting about a dozen classrooms. Without fail, the students were on task, and the team was particularly impressed with the way the students could articulate the task, both in terms of action and purpose. There was little left in the way of disappointment, as the classes were engaged and students working hard throughout the morning. One would not know that it was a delayed start with adjusted periods!
2. Some seniors have inquired if limos or alternative forms of transportation are permitted as a means of prom transportation. In a word, the answer is no. The school provides busing as part of the prom "package," and the expectation is that students who attend the prom do so through the provided bus. If there is an alternative plan needed, administration should be consulted well in advance of the prom day, unless exigent circumstances occur.
3. This is the time of year when we see some challenges start to arise with respect to academics, particularly for seniors whose first semester grades have been reported to college. We understand the sentiments and fatigue, and our teachers are working with students to adjust and adapt constantly. However, that does not excuse students from academics, nor does it absolve them of responsibility. We have been dealing with a slight uptick in students feeling as though they are not accountable to much of anything, and the level of disrespect some adults have been shown in the past couple of weeks has been disappointing. We hope that it is a factor of cold days, omicron woes, and mask frustration, as we are all dealing with the reality and fatigue of the times.
4. Our School Council will be meeting next week to discuss School Improvement Plan progress. We are grateful for the hard work of staff and students alike, as it helped us make significant progress on a number of goals, all with enhancements to teaching and learning at the core. We also have a number of plans that intend to support the school's growth in terms of a variety of programs.
5. Finally, our latest Spartan Podcast includes a conversation with the staff members who attended the FETC conference last week. Tune in to get a sense of how technology continues to impact teaching and learning!
COVID-TESTING OPT-IN
If you wanted to opt-in to test kits to be sent home with your child every two weeks, here is another opportunity. This must be submitted by 6:00pm on Wednesday, February 9th. Unfortunately, if you do not opt-in at this time, we cannot include your student in our numbers for priority. There will be additional opportunities for opt-in in the future.
Please submit this form for each student you have at UHS. If you have more than one student at UHS, please fill out for each time. You should denote the school as "UHS"; other options exist so that we can disaggregate by school to deliver tests to the appropriate students.
