Buc's Bulletin

Our Weekly Class Newsletter October 5- October 9

A Note from Mrs. Buc

We made it through the last of the choppy weeks!! I'm looking forward to a full week next week! This week we started our Global Read Aloud where we will read a different book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal each week and connect with other classes all over the world! This week we read Chopsticks and ate 'sushi' with chopsticks. Actually, we made friendship sushi using a variety of different sweet treats. We have also been matched up with another second grade class from a city just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Today we got to meet them through Skype and shared what we learned from the book and asked each other questions to get to know one another! Ask your children for more details! I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend.

Shabbat Shalom!

Mrs. Buc

What Did We Learn This Week?

Language Arts

Our spelling rule the last two weeks was the FLoSZ rule and we learned that in a 1-syllable word, with 1 short vowel, immediately followed by f, l, s, or z you double the final consonant. In grammar, we started learning about nouns, both common and proper. For writing, we worked on how to choose a good topic and concluding sentence. In centers, we enjoyed a few different Marc Brown themed activities to go along with our Author Study.

Math

We finished our unit on place value! We wrapped up that unit with a fun munchy math; graham crackers (100's), pretzel sticks (10's) and marshmallows (1's). Then, we began learning about money. We reviewed all the coins, their values, and how to add money and show money of different amounts using coins.

Hebrew

Dear 2nd grade parents,

Sukkot and Simchat Torah were the subjects of this short learning week.

We learned about The cycle of reading the Torah, told a story about how the Jewish people got the Torah, how do we celebrate this joyous holiday

and we sang holiday songs.

Here are some vocabulary words you may want to review:

בית כנסת- synagogue (beyt-knesset)

חתן תורה- the reader of the last part of the Torah (chatan Torah)

חתן בראשית- the reader of the first part of the Torah (chatan bereshit)

דגל- flag for Simchat Torah (degel)
