Patriot's Day
5th Grade celebrated Patriots’ Day this week by performing our annual Patriot’s Day Celebration Play before our 4th Graders during school hours followed by an evening performance for Parents/Guardians. The play was a big success as it reinforced classroom lessons about colonial life (making butter), popular games played by children during this time period, and the British tradition of pausing daily activities to take a timeout for a tea break. Finally and most importantly, students learned about the Boston Tea Party and the repercussions of taxation without representation as it related to the Revolutionary War. This Patriots’ Day celebration would not have been possible without the help of our 5th Grade teachers, 5th Grade Liaisons, Parent/Guardian volunteers and their donations. Additionally, recognition and thanks go out to Ms. Herbert (our director), Ms. Cozine (our cafeteria manager), Sra. Esperanza and her crew (our custodians) and Ms.Corkern who painted the waves for our wonderful theatrical prop which represented a British cargo ship for a reenactment of the Boston Tea Party. Again, Patriots’ Day was enjoyable and educational.

Keep Colds and Flu Away
The cold and flu season is here.
Please help us keep our children healthy by:
Encouraging your child to wash their hands before coming to school, before eating, after going to the restroom, and after sneezing or coughing in their hands.
Encouraging your child to cough into their elbow.
Keeping your child home if they have a temperature of 100 degrees or greater. They are not to come back to school until they are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.
Getting plenty of rest.
Eating a good breakfast and sending a water bottle and snack to school to keep your child hydrated and nourished so their little bodies can fight off germs.
I am including a link to the CDC website and a WebMD clip-on handwashing and ways to reduce the germs in your homes. Please take the time to view these and discuss them with your family.

Student Council
Parents,
This year we are accepting box tops all year long. In the fall semester, they can be turned in to your child's teacher with your child's name and the teacher's name throughout the semester. The top five students in each grade level will get to attend breakfast with Santa. We will collect box tops again in the spring semester, and the top five students in each grade level will get to attend a popsicle party outside on the playground.
In addition to turning in box tops the old fashion way, you can now also download the app to have your earnings count toward your student in each of these competitions. When you download the app and create an account, be sure to select Pine Forest Elementary in Humble, Tx to ensure your box tops go towards our school as there are multiple Pine Forest Elementary schools.
Each time you shop, open your app and take a picture of your receipt to submit, and it will show you how much you have earned for PFE. At the end of each semester by the due dates for the competition be sure to screenshot your app and send the photo in an email to pedward@humbleisd.net to have your earnings go toward your student. In the email please be sure to include your student's name, teacher's name, and their grade. We can also split them evenly among all of your children if that info is provided.
To participate in earning box tops, be sure that all paper box tops and emailed screenshots are turned in by December 6th, 2019 to be in the running for breakfast with Santa and by May 8th to be in the running for the popsicle party.
Thanks,
Payton Edwards & Jennifer Howard
