Skyward - Password Changes

As you know, safety and security is our top priority — that includes securing digital information.

In an effort to further increase network security for our families and students, our Skyward Application (used for grades, attendance, ect.) is moving to a stronger password requirement.

Starting on Wednesday, April 19th, families who use Skyward will be asked to create a new, more secure password when they login. Similarly, students will move to a more robust password as well.

DANGERS OF VAPING

Big picture

About 14% of U.S. high-school students and 3.3% of middle schoolers currently vape as of 2021, and the FDA and U.S. Surgeon General have declared it an epidemic. Research shows that vaping is dangerous, highly addictive, and harmful to a child’s health and brain development.

Frighteningly, vaping devices can also be manipulated and refilled with dangerous illicit substances, many of which can be harmful or deadly if used by an unsuspecting child. We are aware of the use of vaping devices in our community that have been laced with illegal drugs.

It is critical for families to talk with their children about the dangers of vaping and substance use. Our school administrators actively, in cooperation with our School Resource Officer, investigate and issue appropriate discipline and education on the dangers of vaping devices.

Ensuring the safety of students and staff requires an ongoing strong commitment to cooperation with our Stanwood-Camano families. As always, health and safety are our top priorities.

Find facts, information, and tips on how to talk with your teen about vaping at the American Lung Association website.

It is important that students come to school with their Chromebooks fully charged everyday. Please make sure your Chromebook is plugged in every evening so it will not need to be charged during the school day. We ask that students keep their chargers at home so they do not risk losing them.

The Stanwood-Camano School Board wants to hear from you!

The Board of Directors typically sets a variety of dates, times, and locations to meet with constituents throughout the school year. Board members look forward to listening and learning about the communities' opinions, suggestions, and concerns. There is no agenda for these events; they are completely informal and anyone can attend.

In spring 2023, board members will hold chats at the following locations:

  • 6-7 p.m. May 2: Director Charlotte Murry at Stanwood Middle School

REMINDER: Attendance Matters!

Attendance at school is extremely important! Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, successful and on track to graduation. Students with high absenteeism, regardless of the reason, struggle to keep up on their learning and their grades. Students need passing grades to earn credit towards graduation. By being at school most of the days of the year, students receive valuable instruction and have an easier time keeping up on assignments. It is also important to make any appointments outside of school hours as much as possible to increase student attendance at school.

REMINDER: Credit Retrieval

Are you behind in credits? Credit Retrieval classes are here to help. This opportunity is available for all grades. Please contact our counselor, Christy Thompson, to get enrolled. You can schedule a time to talk with her at school or contact her through email at cthompston2@stanwood.wednet.edu.

REMINDER: Free internet hotspots available

The Stanwood-Camano School District, through a grant from T-Mobile’s Project 10Million, has hotspots available to those students who do not have internet access available at their homes and need service to extend their learning.

The hotspot allows for 100GB of data. That’s enough data for 140 hours of streaming school videos or 5,000 hours of internet research or 200 hours of online college test prep!

Please let your school know if this is a need your student has.

REMINDER: Student Support

Students needing additional support in the classes have an opportunity to work with teachers after school. Listed below are the days of the week students can get support in specific content areas after school (2:10 - 2:40 PM). NOTE: Students can also make arrangements with teachers for additional support if the days below do not work in their schedule for any reason.

We are here to support every student in their learning. Below are teachers' contact information if you need to ask any questions or need assistance. Teachers are available for students before and after school as well. Please contact your teacher to arrange a time for additional assistance if needed.

For additional assistance, students can reach out to our counselor, Christy Thompson at cthompson2@stanwood.wednet.edu.

Reminder: GET SCHOOL UPDATES VIA TEXT

The school district is adding text messaging capability to our school communication system, which currently uses phone calls and emails. The system will be configured to send text messages to cell phone numbers whose recipients have agreed to receive them.

Many of you already received a text from 67587 earlier this week requesting you to opt-in to receive important informational text messages from your child’s school. You simply need to Reply Y to confirm (messaging and data rates may apply).

Alternatively, you can text “Y” to 67587 to opt-in to receive texts. In the future, if a recipient’s cellphone number is changed or a new number added to our information system database, the new number will automatically be sent an opt-In message.

Reminder: Unstuck Strategies

As a staff, we have been focusing on teaching students the strategies they can use if they get "Stuck" in their learning. The "Unstuck" strategies on the poster below supports students in problem solving through challenging tasks as they become lifelong learners. All classrooms have the poster below posted for students to refer to throughout the day. During class, teachers refer students to the poster and support them in using the unstuck strategies to work through challenging tasks.

The "Unstuck" strategies can also be used at home as students are working on assignments. Students may already be applying some of the strategies on their own, but parents/guardians can also support and encourage students to use these strategies at home.

REMINDER: Partnering in Student Success

Supporting Student Success:

Our teachers work hard to support students academically everyday. Partnering with students and parents/guardians in this work is very important. Supporting students in staying caught up on their work and turning in any missing assignments is very important not only for student learning, but also in maintaining grades that will earn credits towards graduation.

Below are some steps you can take at home to support students academically:

  • Review any missing assignments with your student by having your student login to their Skyward account. Locate the missing work and support your student in completing it. You may reach out to teachers with any questions you have.

  • Review assignments with low scores and have students ask their teachers how they can redo an assignment or retake an assessment to show their new learning to earn a better grade.

  • Arrange a time for students to get additional time and support from their teacher. Please refer to the Student Support section in this newsletter for days of the week students can stay after school for additional support. (NOTE: If a specific day/time does not work in the student's schedule based on the teacher schedule below, please contact the teacher to find another day/time that will work).

Content Support Days (2:10 - 2:40 PM)

Monday: Math

Tuesday: English

Wednesday: Science

Thursday: S.S. / Mr. Clack's Elective Classes

We see our students working hard everyday and we are here to support them in their learning. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our teachers if you have any question.
